It just seems fairly hopeless at this point politically. There needs to be a vast investment in green energy technology combined with multilateral environmental efforts and decommissioning of non carbon neutral transportation, and it needs aggressive action taken very quickly if we want to limit the temperature changes which will lead basically to global chaos.

The problem is, politically it feels impossible without a mass internationalist collective struggle and honestly? That seems unlikely. The left are useless when it comes to organizing collective movements nowadays, and thats made even harder from how bubbled the internet has become where outrage is kept in the confines of our small gated communities. The political right basically don't believe in man-made climate change, and there's this evangelical/pentecostal view that it doesn't matter anyway because the world is gonna end and Jesus is gonna come back or whatever.

The liberals are pushing for some small important changes like the Paris Agreement but thats not even close to being enough. Its a start but its basically like the nuclear proliferation START treaties. A nice positive step, but a very shallow one that ultimately gets ignored and only exists as a symbolic gesture.

Are we all just a tad fucked in the grand scheme of things, just like Keynes once said?

Has anyone ever thought about patching the hole in the ozone layer? Seems like a relatively simple task.

1) Renewables are being adopted at the highest rate ever and are a no brainer. Solar panels and wind are the cheapest form of new electricity and have been this way for years. And we're always installing new sources of electricity as we modernize sections of the grid.

2) AOC is highly likely to pull off the Green New Deal in under 10 years and that will solve the problem very quickly from America's point of view.

3) It doesn't matter if China and Saudi Arabia are morally righteous or not. The economics of the matter will slaughter their revenue if they don't modernize. This is why Saudi Arabia is already switching its entire economy over to solar installations and other future projects of that nature. Or at least, the news articles have started trickling in over the last year or two. Hopefully that giant solar project is still going to be rescheduled.

4) electric vehicles and vertical farms will completely upend traditional sources of pollution. etc.

lots of reasons to be optimistic

the ozone layer problem actually got solved for the most part with the worldwide banning of CCDs I believe. Although I think climate change requires much larger fundamental changes to our economy and infrastructure that it feels a lot less feasible combined with how politicians essentially have no power anymore :P

We solved the worsening of it, if that's true, but did we actually fix the hole?

Seems like hiring NASA to fly canisters of ozone to the atmospheric level of the problem and release the gas would help a lot, unless I completely misunderstood the issue.

Ask China and India

don't foster xenophobic ideas please

they have no choice. the economics of vertical farms and electric vehicles (already happening) and renewables (also already happening) is forcing them to make the leap anyway. India is basically bypassing shitty power poles and wires everywhere, saving tons of capital and resources...by just building solar installations everywhere. Etc.

latest and greatest news from a few years ago was that the hole has basically shrunken to safe levels and it's not a problem anymore, so nobody really cares about it lol

yeah because it's not their fault they wanted to industrialize that way for the longest time. the Big Oil billionaires forced renewables and electric vehicles into the shadows for a long time. so they could keep profiting from being the fuel for industrialization at planetary scale. but finally the science caught up and the tech improved and solar and wind are superior.

now that this is not contestable anymore, China and India are already just going to solar and wind right off the bat in their underdeveloped zones.

It's okay to defend China if someone has honest reasons for doing so and they're being as objective as they can muster at this time.

We need to trust the most objective sources possible.

i dont even get how tankies can support China. China abandoned communism as in ideology in practice in the late 70s. Workers were literally throwing themselves off of buildings coz of the bad conditions a few years ago. It just boggles the mind.

No I haven't daddy tell me about it
Lmao I regret choosing this username now

Basically it's a sci fi film and novel where essentially ppl have lost the ability to reproduce because of a disease thats spread across the globe. Because of a lack of future and hope for the human species, the world has descended into chaos. The only country left standing is Britain which has essentially turned into a authoritarian fascist state in response to the refugee crisis, of people wishing to flee the chaos in their home countries.
