To be fair, GF engages in meta humor all the time. Sun and Moon has a photo rating system, and one of the ratings is "7/10, too much water," a reference to the IGN review of ORAS.

And at this point, I'm almost positive that they have retroactively made the fire starter Chinese Zodiac thing canonical. By the time Scorbunny was announced, it was just too obvious.
