"eks-it" works for voiceless too. the timing isn't the important part of the question

I said ek now, but Im not sure thats what I say all the time.
As I lay here repeatedly saying the word out loud in different contexts, it seems like Im saying eks - it as a noun and egs-it as a verb?

"k" and "s" are unvoiced, "g" and "z" are voiced (if you touch your throat you'll feel it vibrate)

I said it voiceless and had somewhere between an ek and an eg. After reading the options, I spent 20 seconds trying to decide which it was, and settled on no conclusion. But I'm still not the least bit clear on what this was trying to accomplish.

A consonant is unvoiced if your vocal cords don't vibrate while you're saying the consonant, but voiced if your vocal cords do.

For instance, men and women sound identical when saying "ssssssss," but different when saying "zzzzzz." This is because men and women have different voices. S is unvoiced, and Z is voiced.

Do you pronounce exit "egzit" or "ecksit?" Egzit is voiced, ecksit is unvoiced.

I tried it again just now and I said egzit both ways. Unvoiced was first, so it's not like I was swayed by how I said it out loud.

I still claim it's close enough to ecksit to be called an in-between. egksit, perhaps. There's definitely some hardness to the sound that isn't from a "guh".
