Hitler had given his troops an order to immediately fall back if the French had resisted. The whole thing was a massive bluff and the Allies didn't call it. Germany was not remotely ready for a fight at that time.

Germany was stretched very thin with the invasion of Poland in 1938 given they moved the majority of their troops east for it. If there was a time for France/Britain to make a preemptive strike and knock them out early, that was it.
