Now that I'm going to start collecting consoles and games in earnest, I'm going to break the rule I've had since I was a kid and buy an Xbox.

My question is, is it a hearty system? I've heard about the "red ring of death" that the 360 had, but I don't plan on getting that system yet, just the original.

Is it any more or less fragile than the other consoles? I take very good care of my hardware, even my SNES and Sega Genesis still work perfectly, but I've never had a Microsoft console before.

Original xbox has a fault that wasn't discovered til recently. A design flaw has acid from the clock battery used to tell time, eventually leak out onto the motherboard of the console. You can do surgery though and remove the battery to save the system

Fuckin' really? That's one hell of a design flaw.

PS2 was better but it had its fair share of games, and it was powerful.

It's one of those things that became an issue long term. I don't think it happened to anyone until like a decade after it came out.

At least it's an easy fix. It's all fine outside of that. You can even replace the hard drive if you want.

Eh, if it's an easy fix I'm confident I can do it. What good is a clock on a twenty year old system anyway?

Nah it was the only console with the good WRPG's and PC ports for that generation! Splinter Cell is also awesome on it.

Also the custom soundtrack feature is underrated.

I wish I had an Xbox. Just had PS2 but I wasn't interested in like 90% of its games and it was hilariously underpowered

This. Circa 2003 the Xbox was the only console with:

Morrowind
Knights of the Old Republic
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Halo

its real easy to do, too, honestly easier even than any controller fix Ive done.

I found a good website with detailed instructions to do just that.

myoriginalxbox.weebly.com

Looks simple enough to me. Just gotta be careful not to static shock the innards, but that's general knowledge for anyone dealing with chips and boards.

Back in the day my ex gave me an Xbox in lieu of some money she owed me, and I hunted down a copy of Splinter Cell to use to mod it... in the end I decided "fuck it, I have the game, may as well at least try it out" and that's how I discovered one of my favorite series back in the day.

I liked it, but mine was modded which probably gives it an unfair advantage. >_>

I wasnt into Halo but Fable was cool as far as exclusives, but it being modded was a convenient way to play older consoles and get multiplats on it.

motherf**king THIS all day!
Playing an intense racing game like Burnout 3 with your own music blasting is the ultimate experience.
I cannot understand why later systems (and even Steam/PC games!) do not allow this feature. It's literally a game- changer.

Twas a wuss of a console. It broke twice within a few months. After the second time I just decided it wasn't worth getting repaired. It's the only game system I've ever had break on me. Back to the NES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy, SNES, etc. up to modern day consoles have never once broken.
