I'd love to say One Piece, though it can be pretty tropey at times and is a huge commitment. Still though it's hilarious, really fun, and can and will pull at your heartstrings

I saw a video of someone talking about this in passing. I recall the animations kind of reminding me of the old Aeon Flux cartoon.

Of the ones I know for sure I like:

Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell (the first movie and Stand Alone Complex)
FLCL
G Gundam
Paranoia Agent, Paprika, almost anything by Satoshi Kon

Ones I remember liking but haven't seen in a while and not sure if they still hold up:

Trigun
Full Metal Alchemist
Hamtaro (lol)

Also, miss me with anything that have "Classroom"/"Highschool" in the title and/or involves 14-year olds fighting demons and saving the world.
Given this list, you would likely enjoy:

Psycho Pass - a psychological/police anime set in a dystopian future where every citizen is monitored by a system that examines their mental state for signs of criminal intent. The story follows a new detective that joins a unit responsible for arresting/subdoing people based on that system.

Stein's Gate - a sci-fi/thriller about a self proclaimed mad scientist that wants to create a time machine. The story is phenomenal and it's so satisfying once you see how everything ties together. It does have a slow start though.

Baccano - a supernatural/mystery anime set in Chicago during the prohibition era. It's basically monsters where some characters are immortal. It's not for everyone, because the author tells one cohesive story through the eyes of a dozen or so characters. So some parts are really confusing until you see the same events through the eyes of other characters, then it all comes together and it's amazing. If you watch it, watch it with English voices. They really nail the accents.

Samurai Champloo - Action/Comedy anime about a waitress that hires 2 samurai, who originally tried to kill each other, to be her bodyguards while she searches for a "samurai that smells of sunflowers".

I think you mentioned being shown an episode from one of the later JoJo parts, but I still think you should watch Part 1 (Phantom Blood) and Part 2 (Battle Tendency), especially Part 2. Joseph Joestar is one of my favorite anime protagonists of all time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwT1iZV7FD4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxGrqsyVbMU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrUWwkVPG_w

And the ending themes are all licensed music from the West, like Roundabout, Walk Like an Egyptian, and I Want You, and they all just kinda work somehow. This series is just a treat from the start of each episode to the end of each credits sequence.

Black Lagoon is essentially a goofy American action movie in anime form. The premise is that a low level Japanese businessman accidentally joins a criminal mercenary group who live on an island full of other criminal mercenaries and various gangs.

It has the added bonus of the characters actually speaking English, so the dub is just straight up better. It's very weird to have a character say that she doesn't understand the Japanese radio when she's speaking Japanese.

If you like James Bond movies or similar action/spy series, check out Princess Principal. It's a Bond-esque action/spy show but with cute British girls instead of a suave British man, and the dub even gives them the correct accents too. Great action, great story, great characters, just great all around.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QjqkATvH9M

I'll also second the recommendations for Outlaw Star, One Punch Man, Cowboy Bebop, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Samurai Champloo, and Black Lagoon. They all have great action that appeals to more casual anime watchers without many of the tropes that those kinds of fans tend to not like, and they all have high quality English dubs for those casual watchers who don't have much experience watching subtitled anime.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a shounen anime, so yeah there's some pretty heavy anime tropes in there, but it's actually been pretty good. Some great fight scenes.

and tbh it doesn't feel like it's been artificially lengthened (well aside from a certain 100 chapter arc that should've been like half as long for what it was), it's just that the adventure is that long

You know, I always liked the Zone of the Enders anime and OVA. It was pretty much Gundam lite, but it did a good job of tackling two very different different tones while staying fairly tame on anime tropes and without getting overly goofy in either. Except of course for that one nutcase who serves as the rival.

Kitt posted...
Hell nah. I saw one episode of this show that solidified me not liking it.

First of all, it was one of those obligatory beach episodes. In it a girl -- who looks to be a young woman. I don't know how old she is. Anime would literally draw a college student but say they're 14, so I don't know. She looks like a young woman. Anyway -- she's on the beach competing with what looks like a 10 year-old girl for the attention of a bunch of guys and she's losing.

Shit was so dumb.
Yeah that show certainly didn't shy away from anime tropes, and the beach episode really might have been the biggest offender in that regard.

I love the show, but if you're looking for something that's light on the anime feel, it's certainly not a good pick.

I only really got into Gurren Lagann after watching episode 8, because something kind of unexpected happens in that episode and it actually gets better after that unexpected thing. That's really all I can say without spoiling anything. It's a very "anime" show all the way through though, which is why I still probably wouldn't recommend it to someone who doesn't like anime.

I know its basic, but you cant really go wrong with Cowboy bebop

Its not too long

The VA is amazing and not cringe (see: excel saga, fuu from samurai champloo)

The visuals hold up

The music goes hard

The plot is simple enough to follow. The main players are fairly early introduced and you don't really get additional major characters to have to remember

Vinland Saga
Attack on Titan
Death Note

Would be my top three. Berserk and Full Metal Alchemist trailing just behind.

Berserk and Vinland are medieval fantasies. Death Note is a cat and mouse thriller. Attack on Titan and Full Metal Alchemist are both somewhat lengthy adventures that thrive in their mystery.

Cant really go wrong with any of them. Out of all of them, Full Metal is the only one that has many moments of anime that I recall.
