Yeah, the KS looked legit af.

But of course, I'm not a sucker, so I didn't back it.

Some people actually said it was not bad, but the PR fallout was so catastrophic that I never bothered to check it out mys lf.

This, I mean I wasn't involved in the kickstarter BS or stuck with the buggy as hell Wii U version and I agree those problems dragged the game down a lot. But I bought it, completed 100% it and based just on its own merits it was an okay platformer. Definitely some areas that had issues and could've been improved but nothing that made me hate it.

  1. Over promised and under delivered and then told everyone "it's better than nothing"
  2. Late on everything and begged for more money after KS closed
  3. Bait and switch gameplay focused around this dash mechanic no one asked for or wanted.
  4. Game was buggy as fuck
  5. 2 big marketing / pr disasters. One with the CSM staff and another with the legendary commercial

to really feel the full effect, youd needed to have been part of the Mega Man fandom back then. This is not very long after Keiji Inafune left Capcom, and a slew of Megaman games just start getting shit-canned out of the blue. (Notably Mega Man Legends 3, which was its own special kind of bullshit. But there was also a Mega Man version of Mario Maker, before Mario Maker was even a thing)

so Inafune starts a Kickstarter to do a spiritual successor to Mega Man after Capcom all but killed the franchise, and it builds up a lot of hype around hardcore/retro gamer circles.

from there, youd be best served doing a deep dive yourself, but the short version is that it was an incredibly troubled development cycle with countless delays, botched attempts at marketing/connecting with the community, Inafune started ANOTHER Kickstarter before MN9 was even close to done, which was just bad optics. Game starts showing progress, but the actual game looks nothing like what was promised, notably a shift from the 2D concept art to janky 3D models, ditching a transformation mechanic for generic power ups. Hideki Kamiya said some shit and thanks to a Kickstarter gimmick where backers have their name in the credits, the official game credits list Kamiya Was Right lmao.

therea just so much to unpack, but at the end of the day it was basically like Dan Akroyd talking up Ghost Busters 3 for 30 years only for the 2016 reboot to be the final product lol.

Inafune, the guy who had been in charge of Mega Man for decades (he wasn't actually the creator, as some people think), left CAPCOM and acted all smug about how Japanese video gaming is way behind the west.

Fast forward a year or two and the same guy has a Kickstarter for a game called Mighty No 9, which is clearly just Mega Man with a few design tweaks and a different brand, citing "traditional Japanese gameplay" as one of the selling points.

It was an awkward turnaround, but considering Mega Man had been presumed dead for a couple years at this point, and the pitch actually did look pretty swell, the project made its KS goal and all stretch goals several times over.

For a while, things looked good. They even had managed to recruit some of the other people who worked on the original Mega Man games. Then, there was a series of massive PR fallouts, on every topic under the sun, and to make matters worse, they completely fumbled the damage control. Hence the famous "it's better than nothing" comment, which came from an actual interview with the devs. The timeline kept pushing back, and the quality of what was being presented was a massive letdown (especially in the graphics department). They even followed this up with an advertisement describing the player's arsenal as making the bad guys "cry like an anime fan on prom night", which honestly, despite the fact that there was definitely quite an overlap in the MN9 audience and the anime fan base, could have still been played off as a cute little jab if the PR wasn't in such a disastrous shape already. As it was, it just came across as if the devs were actively mocking their own customers, you know, being smug about it.

When all the dust finally settled and the thing actually released, the conclusion a lot of players drew was that they had been conned.

The biggest thing that fucked up Might No 9 was that they under estimated how much if would cost to bring it to 8 different platforms. They were so concern on getting the game to work that they didn't really put that much effort into the actual gameplay.

Nobody actively chasing the mega man formula has succeeded since 9. I thought 10 and 11 were kinda lame even

It had some cool ideas and the levels had decent variety, but the abundance of instant-death bullshit and wonky ledge-grabbing mechanics made a good chunk of the game too frustrating to be fun.

The weapons are actually neat for the most part, even if some are blatantly overpowered compared to others that are useless.

I had to try pretty hard to find stuff to like, but I did manage to come away from it feeling "okay" about playing it. It's not even brushing the tailfeathers of the best Mega Man or MMX games, but it's got some of that spirit--even if it's bogged down by silly design choices and unpolished/poorly tested levels.

Ohhh ok this makes a lot more sense. So the gist of what I'm getting so far is that it was supposed to be the "next mega man" game, it was a kickstarter game, and to top it all off the devs were all smug about not delivering? (though again, it was a kickstarter game so to be expected)
