I took a couple semesters of Spanish in high school but I have no idea if it was mandatory

I'd say it's safe to say that most schools at least offer it and most students will take at least one semester of a language

i had to take foreign language in jr high in louisiana and in high school in texas
french and spanish chosen, respectively because duh

while it wasn't mandatory in my highschool you'd get a slightly better graduation certificate and the choice to skip it as an elective in college if you did take it. you had to take either 2 years of two different language, or 3 years of one.

Depends on where you go. You needed 3 credits (so 3 years) to graduate in my high school. The quality of the classes was really bad though.

Also needed it in middle school but I dont think you needed to pass to move up to high school.
