Apparently, you can now apply for an in-game job where your digital avatar gets paid real money. This is not OF or vtuber related.

https://decentral.games/blog/clock-into-the-metaverse-with-decentral-games

The metaverse is a constantly growing and evolving virtual reality world that is increasingly gaining traction. Users enter the metaverse as digital avatars and interact in this virtual world through the use of augmented and virtual reality. It is easier than ever to attend social events, shop, and play at the comfort of your own private space. With more people going remote and shifting online because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the metaverse is the ideal place to seek refuge in.
Live, Work, Play
For metaverse users right now, it can be an avenue for escapism from banal day-to-day concerns. But imagine a space where you are also allowed to earn a living aside from enjoying activities with friends. Thanks to a growing number of commercial opportunities and need for more immersive experiences on the metaverse, finding work is no longer restricted to the real world.
With Decentral Games on Decentraland, metaverse employment is already becoming a reality. Decentral Games is officially the first in-world employer in the metaverse, recruiting casino floor hosts to play with new players and offer community support.
Clock into the Metaverse
Think working from home on a platform that never sleeps, with people tuning in from anywhere they are. Work is available at any time of the day, and applicants do not face geographical restrictions when applying for the role. Unlike the outside world where it is hard to gather experienced applicants to work at the same place, the open metaverse eliminates this issue by allowing applicants around the world to clock in and clock out as one would from a typical working shift.
Instead of having a virtual assistant powered by an algorithm, a real person is behind the digital avatar providing users a more enjoyable and personalized experience in the metaverse. Users concerns can be better understood and catered to by matching the user with an appropriate virtual human assistant.
There are many benefits in hiring from a wider and more diverse pool of applicants to work in the metaverse. Not only is it easier for the hiring company to find applicants with the right requirements, it is also exciting work for the employee. After all, he or she gets to interact with individuals from all over the world.

businesses had legitimate positions for that yes. one of the dumbest courses i ever took in college dedicated like 2 weeks to "virtual presence" in second life, where we spent several classes talking to business recruiters through the game.

Sorry but I think this is some of the dumbest shit I've ever read. I don't know how you can compare the motivation of pre-schoolers getting a non-consequential gold star that means nothing to someone that's working hard to either have the money to live and/or provide for a family and/or increase their economic and class standing. Getting paid is not supposed to be a reward, it's compensation for doing tasks that people don't want to do but need to be done. A reward in the work place is more like bonuses, vacation time, raises, better positions, and public praise which people are motivated for because it enables them to do more in life.
