Yeah I learned last autumn about the Chinese distant water fishing fleet and then did some more research and digging into it and it is fucking terrifying. And affects like every fucking body, from the Koreas and Japan to Latin America and Africa.

Of course, over-regulation to the point where it's only corporate syndicates and criminal syndicates being able to do business, just ends up exacerbating poverty overall.

Guy is fucking crazy the things he reports on, from modern sea slavery to a lady who runs a ship that performs abortions and other medical procedures for women in countries where it's outlawed (they can sneak into port, get the women onboard, do the procedures for them at sea where the law doesn't apply).

The chain reaction this shit has is absurd, like how it's driven a lot of African migration up towards Europe because the fishers only know fishing and they're getting outfished by foreign fleets with larger ships and more capacity. Or those North Korean "ghost boats" that were winding up in Japan... were winding up there because China was illegally squid fishing off of North Korean waters and forcing the locals out to more dangerous waters in search of food.

ALSO... a lot of the shit they get goes towards... creating fish food for aquaculture, that's one of the worst parts about it tbh

stopped buying fish products after seeing about all that.
