First post: "The blacks can't stop us from being racist! They should go somewhere else."
Second post: "The blacks only make up 6% of our school population! With racist help, we can drop that to 0%!"

It is sad that it is offending the blacks. As I said before the blacks are free and it's time for them to move on to another state where everything is in their favor.

That was literally someone's defense? I knew shit with race was still a huge issue, but this quote just shows how far we really need to go.

There is a part in the article where someone says that the song is ok because only 6 percent of the students are black and "they shouldn't have a say". Fuck these idiots

I say cut loose the old guard. End the song. I'm sure they can endure a few years of no donations and then new alumni will graduate and become donors .

Huh.

*reads the lyrics*

Yes, it would take very little convincing for me to believe that those lyrics have racist origins.

Also it's sung to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad". For crying out loud hire someone to make an original song.

Now that I think about it though, most school fight songs are derivative of one another, aren't they?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eyes_of_Texas

John Sinclair wrote the Texas-specific song lyrics in 1903 to the tune of the original folk song, "I've Been Working on the Railroad,"
...
Johnson was also the program director of the Varsity Minstrel Show that raised funds for the university track team. He debuted the song at the minstrel show.
...
The lyrics of the song have been accused of strong racial undertones due to an alleged performance of the song in blackface at the Varsity minstrel show, a fundraiser for University of Texas athletics during the early 1900s, and also an unsubstantiated claim that the song is directed at freed slaves. Most such accusations against the song are based purely on rumors and unproven theories.

Huh. Im not sure this is any more or less racist than anything else that came out in the 1900s in Texas. I mean, its connected to racism (probably like most things out of the 1900s in Texas.) But is the song itself actually racist just because of its use 120 years ago? I dont see this as being on the same level as Dixie.

Having looked up the lyrics there is nothing in it I would really call racist, just a crappy song. I can't even imagine how that is sung to the tune of I've been working on the railroad, it doesn't seem like it fits at all.

If you think UT's song is crappy you should hear A&Ms.

How does it not fit into the melody. It fits perfectly into the melody.

Big yikes at those reactions. The school song sucks ass anyway. But I've never been a big "school spirit" type.

The school spirit types around here love that shit. It's not difficult to imagine frat bros raging at the notion of changing the song because their dad and grandad sang it.

"The Eyes of Texas" is a satirical rendition of Confederate commander Robert E. Lees saying the eyes of the south are upon you."

Students, as students will do, decided to make fun of that and created a satirical song that have words that were appropriate to the University of Texas, Gordon said in a recent interview. Those are the words of the song, and they put it to the tune of a well-known song, which was Ive Been Working on the Railroad.

Gordan said "The Eyes of Texas" was originally a satirical song once performed at minstrel shows, which are comedic variety shows featuring white performers in blackface.

Ok. I went to UT from 2014-2018 and did not know this at all. I would imagine 95% of students would agree and tell the song to fuck off.

Lol, reading the lyrics the first thing that came to my mind was the Walker Texas Theme. Once I got that out of my head, I could see how it works with that tune, but it is awkward.

What a weird ass song to begin with.

I was curious so I looked up my school's song and it's just some relatively generic stuff that sounds like it's focused entirely on football lol.

This is a terrible arguement to make considering these schools get a lot of their funding from overwhelmingly white donors. So there wouldn't be a school for those black athletes otherwise.

Its almost like everyone can benefit from each other regardless of race.
