The joke is that upward mobility is a myth and you'll be at that same position after 4 years.

They call it entry level to justify massively underpaying you. They actually want someone qualified they just don't want to pay that person

You're assuming they're enabling new people to get into the industry. They just want to get people who have experience from working with their competitors in the industry.

But beyond that, I'd guess internships.

Also this.

Its part of the negotiation process. They have to start at a higher position to give them more wiggle room and to weed out the people who'll see that and give up.

Some career paths have different "levels."

I became an entry level network engineer back in 2014 because of my experience working in a network operations center and getting certs.

This, they're hoping to get a sucker to underpay. If they can't find one then they'll start considering the no experience applicants.

Question for you since you're here. I'm in the process of getting a cert right now for A+ and then moving onto a network cert (cisco or Net+ not sure yet). With those two certs how easy would it be to jump into a networking role with no previous networking experience?

A big part of it for a lot of companies is so they don't actually get anyone at all. If they require years of experience and absurd degrees for "entry" level positions then the people who are qualified won't bother with entry level, and most others won't even bother applying since they don't qualify. This way these big companies can then claim there are no qualified Americans for the job and they can then hire foreign workers on H-1B visas for half the money. Companies have been abusing this system for over a decade now.

Yeah sometimes it means they don't want to hire from the outside and the position is going internal or they want visas.

Apply anyway

my job asked for 8 years professional experience; I had none (in that particular field)

you just have to make your case that youre good for the company. This is where a good cover letter can come in

For a NOC role, you'd be way ahead of most applicants.

I personally decided to go with Cisco over Net+ because back in 2013 the Net+ covered stuff from the 80s that wasn't used any more. Also, Cisco gives companies incentives for hiring a certain number of Cisco certified individuals with discounts on equipment.

I think the Net+ would give you a more well-rounded understanding of networking in some aspects, but Cisco does a great job of training specific to their stuff while also teaching universal fundamentals.

Also, the further you go in Cisco certs, the better your skillset will be, which demands higher pay.

  • Professional level (CCNP, but I think they changed the name of it)
  • Expert level (CCIE)

And just to add to this, when I was job-hunting I had three interviewers tell me directly that my cover letter was what convinced them to bring me in for an interview

so take the time to write something sincere that makes your case, it will pay off. A lot of people just treat it like a formality
