I'm new to this and don't know a whole lot about hardware. My end goal is to have unified storage for my movies/etc. and be able to stream to a smart TV easily. I'm looking at either Emby or Jellyfin for software.

I'd like to keep it pretty low cost, and im considering either:
  1. Some cheap older all-in-one like a Dell Optiplex
  2. Raspberry Pi with USB storage drives?
Any advice from someone who has set up a media server?

If it's literally just streaming/watching things on harddrives then just get a desktop and shove a few 8TB hdds in there

I set up an old (as in like 6 years ago) dell desktop with 3 hdds of 8tb each and it's fine for the kids to watch the fucking like 500+ dvds the school had converted to mp4s

Yeah but whats like the cheapest reliable thing I can get? I don't have any old desktops around, I think the raspberry pi setup with some storage would be like $100-120 or something, and I assume much lower power consumption

Pi plus Ubuntu with an sd card would be cheapest
it depends if it's for streaming or storage and if storage, how much
Like a 256gb is more than enough for 10 dvds converted + ubuntu + vlc or something
