I feel like it really took off during the 360/PS3 era. Games like Halo, GTA and Minecraft pulled in people who otherwise wouldn't normally be into gaming.

FFXIII was the death knell of jrpgs for me.

Gaming's been pretty mainstream for longer than most people here, myself included, have been alive
I'd say the NES was probably a huge turning point for console gaming. I know game systems like Atari pioneered home consoles, but I view the NES as when it really took off and wasn't just looked at as something only children and losers do.
