I've been an Obsidian fan since day 1 with KoTOR 2 but never got a chance to play the Pillars series. Is it worth it? Been looking into getting an RPG, and I heard this is the same universe as Avowed so I'm really tempted to install now (got it free from EGS a while ago).

I had a hard time with it. Think I quit around the first gigantic city I got to.

Don't read the soul stories, they're pointless and mostly terrible.

I recommend it.

If you do play it, go into the settings and enable auto pause on enemy spotted and spell cast.

Yeah, the game starts off with huge exposition dumps for worldbuilding, except the world is still just general fantasy stuff, except I guess the world's god pantheon is more important than most. Still a fun series though, if you're into Baldur's Gate you'll like this one.

I would highly recommend the first one. The second a bit less so.

I'll install it and give it a try once I'm finished with Dragon Quest XI. I'm a big reader and fantasy nerd, might like this. Thanks guys

Yup be prepared for a lot of reading, though if you're into it there's some great lore and characters to enjoy. Great game.

The first one is okay. It kind of drags a bit, especially in the middle, but it's good enough.
The second one is great though, and I feel like it's improved quite a bit by playing the first, as it's a continuation of the same story.

I think I preferred the first game, but the second one definitely made some combat improvements and toned down the dialogue a bit. Worst part of the first game is the insufferable, self-indulgent dialogue in some places (particularly Durance, in my opinion).

Absolutely

ESPECIALLY if you like Baldurs Gate/Icewind Dale/Planescape Torment/Arcanum

PoE1, I think, was the better game. Trying to avoid spoilers, but...

PoE2 had a neat multi-class system, but I largely preferred PoE1's class abilities, talents, etc.

I also liked PoE1's setting and story more. The Dyrwood and the hollowborn crisis were more interesting than the Deadfire and dealing with the four factions. PoE2 just didn't have nearly the same mystery and intrigue as PoE1.

PoE2 also tries to make it sound like the main quest is very urgent, but then you get sidetracked over and over again with endless assignments.

The sailing in PoE2 also sucks. It is much more tedious than PoE1's travel system of clicking the intended location on the map. Even managing your castle and visitors in PoE1 was better than managing your ship in PoE2. Ship combat was unbearably bad and there is never a reason to not just immediately board and kill the enemy ship.

PoE2 had mixed results with the weapons. The split paths upgrade system was neat, but the weapon selection seemed to suffer. Weapon variety was worse, as you're largely drowning in scimitars. And a lot of the magic weapons were less satisfying to use, since a lot of effects were weaker. In PoE1, you'd have a weapon that does X on a critm. In PoE2, you may have a weapon with a 10 - 25% chance to do X on crit.

PoE2 also has a lot of performance issues, even on a PC that should easily be able to handle it. A lot of framerate issues, crashes, stuttering, etc. The best you can do to mitigate the issues is to not launch the game from steam, but rather the .exe.

The characters in PoE2 largely felt lacking, in my opinion. Especially since so many aren't really companions, but rather "sidekicks" that have limited party interaction.

Beyond that, its harder to narrow down. I just know that PoE1 had me largely engaged for the duration, but PoE2 started feeling like a real chore less than halfway into it. But your mileage may vary.
