did you know that the classic mustard yellow tunic of Starfleet's commanding officers is actually supposed to be green? it's true!

the original intent was for the uniforms to be based on the RGB system, red for engineering and security, blue for science and medical, green for command and navigation.

however, due to the pale avocado color of the tunics, as well as the lighting and quality of the film, the uniforms ended up looking distinctly yellowish on screen. they've been offically considered yellow ever since even though they're actually not

as an aside, Kirk's shiny dress uniform is clearly a bright green color. even as a kid I always wondered why it wasn't yellow like his regular uniform. well, now we know
