It's too much control.

It's been a long time since I played 8. I recall at the time preferring Materia, but nowadays the concept is rather stale. Maybe on a replay I might appreciate the novelty.

In theory it's fine, but the way it was implemented just felt mindless and broken.

Sure, let me attach Cura to my HP to get a health buff. That's actually pretty cool.

...No, don't scale the buff with the amount of spells I managed to grind, to the point that actually using the magic is strictly inferior to just sitting on it.

...card game grinding was actually fine though. Every game benefits from having some convoluted, game breaking strategy for the hardcore players. If you go out of your way and spend hours carding enemies to beat other people in card games, manipulating weird game rules and gambling prizes to accumulate more cards to turn into items to process items into different items to turn those items into late game magic, you deserve your game breaking stats. >_>

One of the bosses in Ultimecias Castle couldnt damage me at all as I was absorbing every elemental magic they were attacking me with.

i actually think this was the least bad part of it. to use items in final fantasy tactics you had to level up as a chemist.

attaching magic to stats was dumb and bad. or at least, as stated above, tying it to the stock was.

spending job points (spelled with a g since this is ff8 and not fft, but same shit) to learn skills that are attached to summons who you can pass around the party was great, it meant that you didn't have one character that was irreversibly decked out to be one thing, so you could make up an action command list of your own choosing

and eventually you realize that autohaste rinoa is the best- turn on angel wing and let her cast ultima until the fight ends.
