that depends a lot on whether or not you're actively looking for "new" rap music to listen to. also on whether or not you're trying to actively engage with the music while you listen

I like heavy guitar licks and high pitched screaming. I'm not really sure what actively engaging means, like dancing or tapping my foot? I would just leave it on a spotify channel for that genre I wouldn't even know how to find new songs another way

I used to dislike or lack interest in a lot of music but eventually branched out through bands that mixed genres. Find something you like, then look for those aspects in bands that blend more sounds, and repeat until you have that gradient effect. I think metalcore could eventually branch you out to any kind of music tbh >_>

This would be highly dependent on how open-minded you are. Like, do you want to enjoy the music your gf listens to with her? Or do you resent the fact she's always taking over the airwaves listening to stuff you don't care for?

Im open to a lot of stuff but there's some music that just pisses me off with how it feels like it's assaulting my ears and my mood lol. I don't think I could ever come back from such a strong dislike. Especially in my 30s.

Eventually you'll obviously find a subgenre that you like

Hip-Hop especially is one of if not the most versatile genres in music period in terms of production.

check this out, it's a bluegrass song but the main riff is like right outta metal

https://relisten.net/billy-strings/2020/01/18/turmoil-and-tinfoil?source=203914

the way i got into other genres, like bluegrass and country, was a sort of gradual process. it started with The Grateful Dead, who combine a lot of genres including country and bluegrass. from GD, i got into Jerry Garcia's solo work, which ventured more into the traditional. i eventually got into Jerry's side project "Old and In the Way", a bluegrass band. that opened me up to an entire genre of music with hundreds of artists to explore.

my venture into country was similar. the Dead have a lot of country roots so I started listening to some of the songs they covered. this lead me to explore Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard's discographies.

This is why it's hard to move out the genre as well. If you're deep enough, you have playlists for every mood just in hip hop. Though I do prefer Soul when I want some love music. Hip hop does love, but it's usually complicated love. Sometimes I just want that soul to make it a nice and easy listen.

So easily that it feels insulting. Also, you're a good example as to show that working in music doesn't mean you know all music. It's dumb to think just cause you work in music, you don't have biases and blindspots.

tbh i often feel like i missed the boat with respect to music. never listened to it growing up. was never a thing any of my friend groups did. to this day i have never just sat down and listened to music. i started listening when i was 19 or 20 and it was like top 100 pop radio. that shifted to classic rock like the who, the stones, the doors. most big guys from the late 60s-80s. then it shifted to like glam and hair metal. then heavy metal which is where im at now

idk how it happened. i guess it's indicative that my taste in music can change, but it hasnt exactly expanded. if anything i like less music now lol. cant stand any of the old pop and rock stuff i used to listen to

Anyway considering i listen to an eclectic range of music anything from country to idm, Cuban jazz to afrobeat, metal to ambient, hip hop to blues i think in more than qualified to critique music.

And TC if you're transitioning from Rock to Hip-Hop a perfect starting point imo would be N.E.R.D.

They're a Rock Band by the Neptunes who are R&B/Hip-Hop Producers, and their albums combine the styles of both genres very well. Especially in their later albums.

All of their albums are great but my personal favorite is Seeing Sounds
