The light to show that it's charging is turning on, and I briefly get the lights next to the power button to come on, but that's it.

I occasionally get a power and battery warning when there is nothing wrong with the bloody thing.

And why are newer laptops so inconvenient to where you have to take the thing apart to get to the battery as it is?

In the old days you just took the broken one off and stuck a working one on.

that's how pretty much everything is now. don't want people to just buy a replacement battery and rather then upgrade every 1-2 years when the battery craps out. my laptop is about 4.5 years old and the battery was never great since it was a gaming laptop but after like 2-3 years the first battery was completely dead. this 2nd battery is getting there and lasts like 45 minutes so i basically just need it plugged in all the time. when i replaced the battery i had to basically take the whole thing apart. had to detach the screen, take out the keyboard to get to where the battery is and it was glued in so it was annoying to get out. took like an hour to do. but compared to doing it on my phone it was way easier. at least you could get it open. phones are horrible with that extra strength glue samsung uses.

No, it's got five lights along the side; they'll come on for ~5 seconds and then just stop

Laptops with easily removeable batteries haven't existed for nearly a decade now.

If the battery is the problem, it doesn't really matter how easy to remove it is.

It kinda does. You could fuck your warranty or something if you mess with opening the laptop to get to the innards.

So the fingerprint scanner can also be pressed in, like a button, to turn the laptop on. I kept pressing the small button the side that I guess is for checking battery life/health.
