Final Fantasy--the main games, at least--is never going back to its turn-based roots. The series is too mainstream and popular, and turn-based is seen as "archaic".

They've been saying this since ff12 man.

At this point they want to emulate a game like DMC but always tack on some sort of pseudo time-based system to try to appease the hardliners.

Action RPGs are fine. Ys proved this quite awhile ago.

However, "this one guy you control plus a bunch of AI guys you never will" = nope.

As cool as that would be, you'd at that point essentially be putting two entirely different games into one (albiet reusing graphical / sound assets).

FF7R's "classic mode" is likely about as good as it's going to get in regards to bringing back classic behavior, and to be honest, I wasn't very impressed with that.

I'm just glad there's other series / games out there that are more like classic FF. A pretty good one I played recently was I Am Setsuna.

If you want classic FF and classic FF only, go Bravely Default 2. Those who are able to get with the times will enjoy this.

I wouldn't mind as much that modern FF games have shitty garbage action-penis combat if the rest of the games felt like a proper FF game. 12 sorta did it, but even then the story was just missing giant chunks that tied it together. They haven't made an FF game that felt like a true FF game since 10 (MMos excluded) and I know it's often controversial to even include that one.

As much as I would consider FFX to be hands-down the best in the series, I can definitely feel that it was starting to slide away from what 6 to 9 were like. I think the difference here is it stayed close enough that it still felt like FF, even if a bit of an unusual one, and this worked out great; whereas 12 onwards go too far and just feel like completely different games.

the combat in ff7r is very good, hope they take that framework and iterate on it in 16

Squeenix has fully admitted that they're chasing dudebros, who will never play some "weeb nerd!" game anyway.

I figured most people knew this by the fact that it has DMC5's combat developer.

And I honestly don't mind. I'm more concerned about the full-on fantasy setting. It looks bland to me, and if there's not any tech or industrial aspects in the world/story, that's kind of a deal-breaker.
