It certainly looks cool, and I like the idea of being able to hop into a starship, get into a dogfight on the way to another star system, then land on a whole new world and start building a base there, but... it's still got a lot of negative reviews, and I can't tell how many are accurate and how many are just the internet hate machine refusing to let go of one of its favourite chew toys.

I'm also not a huge fan of directionless games, so does NMS have a plot, or at least something to give you a reason to do something/go somewhere beyond just playing around for the sake of it? Compare, say, Minecraft to Dragon Quest Builders- freedom is nice, but adding context and reward makes it feel much more satisfying.

If you like the pitch, you should buy what they're selling!

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

Here's my take, when it came out, I was interested in it, so I bought it. And I pretty much never hated a game more, in my life. Ugly, bland, janky, aimless, and annoying. Completely loathed everything about it.

Every update, people would say "oh it's so much better now", and I would redownload it, and I could tell it was slightly better, but I still absolutely hated it. It made me want to vomit, just looking around.

Haven't played it in a year or so though, so it could theoretically be good now! I still feel the temptation to try it again, even after all these disappointments, because I do love procedural generation so much, fundamentally.

Quite a nice video. I remember a number of the youtube folk's negative take on the game at the time, and even hearing the game was in a much better place I wasn't particularly keen on giving it a go. Might have to reconsider that now. Regardless, they've at least earned some respect from me for the turnaround they were able to pull off.
