I sleep in two different, smaller, shifts.

After work I have dinner then a 1 or 2 REM sleep cycle nap, then I get up and do whatever I want because I have energy. After a few hours then I take another 3 cycle nap.

How long is each nap session?

How long have you been doing this?

Do you work or go to school? It seems like this could be hard to do unless you adhered to a strict schedule.

  1. I use an online sleep calculator, and focus on trying to get a minimum of 5 per day. https://sleep-calculator.com/
  2. Almost two years now.
  3. Currently I work from home, but before Covid I worked about 45 minutes from home and my wife would have dinner ready by the time I got home so it was usually easy to get home, shower, nap.

I actually just woke up from a 2 cycle nap. Today I worked from 10 am - 7 pm, then dinner and napped, now I'll be streaming for about 2 hours in 40 minutes or so, then I'll shower and have an hour or two to myself then back to bed.

The two big benefits have been
  1. I have energy after nap to work on personal projects/stream/whatever, whereas before after work I'd just veg out and watch tv basically.
  2. Since I work from home it helps to provide a very clear work time and personal time separation, something that many friends complain about missing.

Interesting. Have you noticed any adverse side effects? Any health problems? I'm curious as to how healthy this is, in both the short and long term. But if you're not experiencing any health issues, I suppose it's okay, even if it's not "normal."

What do your family and friends think of your sleeping habits?

I'd be interested in trying something like this. I work from home too, but I also want to be more creative this year. But it's hard to do that when you're exhausted after a day of work.

Why would there be any adverse effects? I get the same amount of sleep as normal, if not more. It's just broken up into two smaller windows as opposed to one large one.
In fact, I sleep better because I DO have medical issues with my back and joints. Anyone with back issues will tell you that after being in bed too long you wake up super stiff. This sleep cycle has improved that tremendously.

My wife usually joins me for nap, but sometimes she'll skip the nap and just go to bed a few hours before me. I don't see why anyone not living with my would care.
The only downside is that since I go to sleep around 7 pm we generally can't do late night restaurant trips, but eh. That said, I haven't had any issues breaking this sleep pattern for a night other than just sleeping in extra the next day.

This is exactly the point. For years after work I'd have dinner then just watch tv for hours until bed. It was really unfulfilling as I'd be too tired to work on personal projects or even play games I really wanted to play. This has completely changed that for me.

Also, this didn't give me the idea but I saw this article supporting what I've been doing:

Do it bro ski.
The first few nights might be rough waking up from the initial nap, so set your alarm and put the phone on the opposite side of the room so you have to get up and walk over to turn it off. After a few days you'll love it.

Well, that all doesn't sound too bad. I was just curious about the whole experience.

And that's an interesting science article.

You make me want to try it. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
