I was reading some posts about how RE 8 "probably won't run so good on ps4" compared to ps5 and I was surprised. Ps3 to ps4 was barely much of a upgrade. I can't even imagine how negligible ps4 to ps5 would be? Are there like, more enemies onscreen or more scripted uncharted-y events happening onscreen to claim ps5 being that big a leap?

I'm just more used to the huge gap between gen 4 and gen 5, and even ps2 was quite a different from ps1

Changes arent as noticeable as they were back then. Since realistic models were achieved with the ps3/360 generation, its all about pushing the resolution, better textures, denser backgrounds and the quest for 60 FPS....and of course ray tracing.

Each generation shift sees diminishing returns compared to the one that came before it.

You probably won't see anything like the jump from SNES to N64, or PS2 to PS3 again anytime soon, if ever.

The SSD alone is a pretty big difference since the game can essentially load in new assets and content significantly quicker. Most of the improvements aren't as obvious graphically but more for performance.

It was a significant upgrade, but

And this will continue to be the trend.

SNES aged like fine wine, while N64 aged like sandwich meat left out for a year. Doubt we see it work like that anymore either

You're not wrong.

Though I also have some nostalgia for the mid-90s 3D graphics and MIDI soundtracks as well.

Bomberman Hero is one perfect example of both.

it's a pretty big difference. GPU probably isn't the biggest jump per generation, but the other things are significant. especially CPU and SSD speed.

The RDNA GPU might be 50% more efficient than GCN TFLOPs on PS4 per flop. 10 vs 1.8 TFLOPs is on paper, but ps5's gpu is way more efficient and modern.

The CPU, RAM and SSD is significant as well. More things on screen, better open world games, significantly faster loading times and much higher framerate for games.

SSD? Does that mean that load times can be eliminated, and games can transition through scenes and battle screens seamlessly?

Not that load times were a big deal this gen, I dont think I've ever had something near ps1 ff9 from any game yet

It'll help. Ratchet and Clank swaps between different areas instantly, though you have to take into account it being a promotional video:

Honestly the most lack luster jump was the ps4/xbox one launch. That was the oy gen I never bothered buying either launch title and the graphical difference at the time were very negligible.

The ps5 and series X however feel and look next gen compared to last with much better features unlike last gen.
