Brutal doom is awesome, but I really love seeing some of the custom maps! Right now I'm playing UAC ultra, Ancient Aliens, and Valiant.

Brutal doom is amusing but apparently the author of it is a real piece of shit, to the point people have made alternate open source versions of it just not to endorse the guy.

Ancient aliens is amazing but i've yet to try it, had the bookmark for it forever.

Back to Saturn X is also pretty fucking good if you haven't tried it yet.

Scythe 1 and 2 I'm not touching lol, they'd murder me, I'm still dying multiple times on some of the early maps of the three I'm playing and they're not the hardest.

Also, playing through Doom 2, first time in forever, and really wanting to mess around in Doom Builder by remaking some of the maps. I was doing a ranking topic but it died, so I'll probably post some rankings on here :)

I had plans to go through Doomworlds's 100 best WADs thing, but I didnt make it out of the 90s.

I'll pick back up at some point.

Anyway, the Russian Overkill weaponset mod is my favorite to screw around with. Its hilariously overpowered but good if you want to nuke a few thousand demons at a time in an ancient game engine

I need to do that, but some of the top ones sound just miserable, especially Mucus Flow.

Just getting through Doom 2 and this is gonna be my focus. Just finished Bloodfalls, it's garbage, and even worse coming after a masterpiece like The Chasm.

ok, so finished Doom 2. Actually a very strong end; other than Bloodfalls I thought each level in the last 5 before the Icon of Sin were fantastic. Icon of Sin sucks.

So for custom maps, I'm playing Ancient Aliens, Valiant, and UAC Ultra, 4 maps in on each so far.

Ancient Aliens, made by Skillsaw, uses a bunch of custom textures to create some amazing architecture, with some absolutely amazing effects considering it's still basically vanilla doom other than custom textures. The maps are often focused on exploration, usually built around some gimmicks, including lots of caged demons you can telefrag(in map 1, the whole map is played around a cyberdemon in a cage, map 3 it's a series of arachnotrons, and map 4 is two Archviles up in towers and four Manacubus on the ground. But the levels feel incredibly fresh and fun, and will probably start kicking my ass later. The game uses a bunch of unique textures for enemies, but so far other than looks everything is very vanilla doom.

UAC Ultra is more traditional doom gameplay, less gimmicks, but still with plenty of creative fights. Special nods go to a Baron of Hell you have to take out before stairs raise and let him and his pinkies come down to meet you, an archvile that appears and teleports behind you to the beginning of the map filled with hitscanners you've gone through, and a platform separating two rooms that repeatedly fill with cacodemons after various actions. It's probably the hardest one so far, but always feels fair.

Valiant, my favorite of them so far, is also by Skillsaw, and is just straight action. Gorgeous arenas that tend to be very fast and very memorable. Lots of custom content here. The pistol sounds a lot nicer and fires a lot faster, and the chaingun is replaced with the super chaingun, which has a much faster fire rate and chews through ammo like nothing. The imps now fire much faster projectiles, and fire them in pairs. The pinkys now move and attack faster. Arachnotrons now have a chance of breaking from their body in death and flying around shooting at you(the flying versions also appear on their own). Add to that incredibly fun music and lots of brutal ambushes, and this one is so far absolutely amazing.
