Rest in peace to the wonderful brown rat who sacrificed his own life to save the white one when he was sick.

The white one became depressed so I decided to integrate the 2 month old rat into his cage early, and the white one was immediately overjoyed.

Basically, the white one got pneumonia and the brown one was healthy, but the brown one spent basically all day cleaning the white one, sucking out the mucus from its nose, etc.

If rats lived longer and weren't so susceptible to infectious disease, they would be the best pets ever. Everything else about them is great.

The most striking thing about them is just how much they want to play with their owners. It's so different from other small pets, like hamsters and gerbils.

The young one is overjoyed. Ratney is happy but occasionally has a "I'm too old for this shit" vibe when Smokey pushes the envelope. Smokey has so much energy and wants to play all the time.

Rats are extremely intelligent and very social. Sickness and death bother them like it bothers us.

Be same as in humans. Things like not moving as much, not eating as much, not reacting to outside stimuli as much for a few examples.

Once you get to know your pets normal behaviour you can tell when something isnt right.

So I'm devastated, Smokey developed tachypnea yesterday afternoon and with a few hours progressed extremely fast. I could tell he wasn't going to make it through the night, and he was clearly very scared. Only a few months old.

So I literally stayed up all night, holding him to keep him warm and comfortable. But then he started gasping for air through his mouth, which to me looked a lot like agonal breathing (the final stages of respiratory collapse and sometimes cardiac arrest).

He completely went ballistic, fell out of my hands, started crawling around on the floor with his eyes bulging, and then curled up and stopped moving. It was absolutely horrifying to watch.

I don't know what virus this was, but only Ratney survived.

If I wasn't already used to seeing this sort of thing in the hospital, I would have been legitimately traumatized.

By the way, I'm okay. It's just hard to believe that's how he died. Normally respiratory arrest happens slowly after someone passes out from hypercapnia.

Ratney made a full recovery, which apparently is actually rare even in its own right as usually rats have permanent lung damage if they survive. The survival rate is less than 20%.

It's definitely some kind of zoonotic virus like Coronavirus. I just can't get over how quickly it affected the young rat. Ratney took a day or two, and Brownie was a little faster but still over a day.

My best guess at this point is that I should not expose any other rats to Ratney for at least a few weeks if not a month. Honestly, based on what I saw, it's extremely lucky that Ratney survived.

My guess is arrhythmia caused by hypoxemia. It looked like agonal breathing, which is usually something that happens during the dying process. Probably had an unsustainable heart rhythm due to low oxygen.

I mean, I'm not a veterinarian, but there is a remarkable amount of overlap in biology, especially with mammals.

This is one of those times where I'm glad I have compassion, but I'm not fundamentally very empathetic. I do legitimately feel bad for that rat, but it's something from which I can move on. I used to think my lack of empathy was a curse, but now I really believe it's a gift that helps me stay level-headed when things like this happen, so I can potentially fix it.
