I always save often in every game. There was a roll back on Maple Story once where I lost 2-3 days worth of progress. Thats about it.

I once spent 3 hours making equipment and doing the arena in Dragon Quest 8 on PS2 when the power went out and of course I never saved.

400 hour MHW game file. PS4 died and I hadn't uploaded my saves in a few months.

Started over and have a new file sitting at 1200 hours.

I had a Madden 25 franchise where I would play a season of NCAA 14, upload the draft class, play a season in Madden 25, and repeat.

I would track the stats of the players that got drafted from my NCAA teams. I found that nerdy shit fun. >_>

So I was like 6 seasons in, and the fucking save for Madden corrupted and no matter what I tried to do, once it got to the post season the game hard locked.

I haven't bought a Madden game since.

Lost my launch 3ds 3 years ago which contained thousands of hours of gameplay on digital saves. It's the impetus for my decision to get into homebrew.

Dragon Age: Origins. There used to be a bug where if you sold too much to one merchant it would fuck up the save data. I apparently hit that limit & my previous save was more than 10 hours back-- I was so frustrated I stopped playing the game, not going back till about a year later.

GTA San Andreas 100% completion being stuck at 98%. Twice.

Cyberpunk 2077. I was about 50 hours in to a playthrough when I decided to give one of the other lifepaths a try. Forgot to create a manual save first. Tried to go back to my first game after a couple of hours, but nope.

About 5 hours, sometime in the mid 90s I was trying to do a no-death, single-sitting runthrough of A Link to the Past and the screen glitched out right when I blew up the super bomb to open the room to the fairy that gives the silver arrows. I freaked out and shut the game off and then realized a few seconds later that I hadn't saved, and that was the last time I attempted any sort of challenge that would take several hours to complete.

I once lost a 500 hour save file for Star Ocean 3, going for those battle trophies. There was a bad storm so I rushed to save my progress. Power went out, and my save was corrupted.

I don't know why I attempted it tbh.

Probably some save in Pokmon that got erased when the cartridge battery died.

Or in HP:TCoS for GBC I had a maxed out save (which required beating it on NG+ like 5 times) erased when some snot missed kid I was babysitting started a new game.

if this counts then had this happen a few times. younger brother or sister or cousin deleting my saves for n64 games and stuff. can't think of any specific examples.

recent one was 5-10 hours in ginormo sword. old flash game from 2008. was playing it on a flash emulator but i dunno what happened and after like a week it erased all my data and wouldn't work anymore. so maybe they deleted flash save files in your browser finally.

Back in like 2001 I once lost like 2 hours of grinding in Pokemon Silver at the end of my brother's soccer game because his coach's bratty son ran up to me and said "The game's over, time to leave" and pulled the cartridge out of my game boy.

I once had a 15 page memory card for the PS1.

I had tons of save files for RPGs/etc on it.

It glitched and every page disappeared.

NEVER AGAIN.

Eh, I save often, and play lots of games with autosave features so not that many hours. Maybe, and just maybe, a 1 hour or 2 segment on something from the PSX era where I forgot to save for some reason.

Edit: Wait, I think I remember a Darkest Dungeon file getting corrupted because power went out when it was autosaving and lost everything. Had a full Hamlet with everything upgrade and several maxed chars with good quirks :(

About 15-20 hours of Assassin's Creed Black Flag on the PC. It was some bullshit involving their cloud saves getting way behind for some reason and then overwriting your local auto save in a game where I didn't really think Manual Saves were that important. I walked away from that game for almost 2 years after that happened.

I go on the internet and basically saw a mob of people that had this happen to them saying "for the love of god turn off cloud saves if you are playing this game!" but it was too late for me.

I had a nearly 100% Weapon Master mode save file in Soul Calibur II on the GCN. I had done all the main missions and literally was only missing like one or two of the side missions you get for playing it a second time. I think it was one of the ridiculous ones where it's like "Your health is constantly draining due to poison and you have a bomb that will explode if you get knocked to the ground" types near the end.

I had that save file on a 1019 memory card which are very prone to corrupting. You can guess what happened. Pretty sure I had poured close to 200 hours into that save file over a few years.

I almost lost like forty hours of progress in KH3 when my PS4 hard drive was dying. It glitched out during an autosave and corrupted my save files. Luckily, I had PS+ at the time and had a cloud backup. So, I only lost an hour or two instead of literally everything. Also, protip, do not get the Seagate Firecuda 2TB hard drives for your PS4. They are all but guaranteed to fail eventually.

Oh shit I also had a black flag experience! It was when I realized saves were tied to account, not the actual game or console save file which I thought was pretty fucking BS and reminded me of just another reason to hate the post gen 6 era of gaming
