When I worked on the ambulance going too fast was the number one cause of accidents. "No!" You say, "it's distracted driving!". Yes, technically, but they wouldn't have crashed if they drive the speed limit

People have an emotional connection to driving. You're not a better driver than other people. Everyone thinks that. Going 5 over everywhere you go is dangerous

That last line is cold blooded... even still it's the truth. I live in Texas and while I'm sure it happens in most places, people seem to think bad weather means drive faster. It never works out. Hope the rest of the people can get home safely, and condolences to the ones who cannot.

About one-10th of an inch of ice accumulated just north of Fort Worth, the National Weather Service said.

I don't mean to chuckle. But I do each time. This is the Free independent south that gets shut down by a soft blanket of snow, each time.

Eh, that's half true. In California, the most common Primary Collision Factor (PCF) on a police report is VC 22350 - unsafe speed. Also known as, going too fast for conditions. But that isn't the same as going over the speed limit (that would be 22349 (a) in the CA Vehicle Code).

If you're in traffic on the freeway, going 25 mph, and you slam into the car on front of you because you didn't react in time when they stopped... The PCF would still be unsafe speed. It doesn't mean you were speeding, it just means that your speed was unsafe for your following distance at the time.

Yep, I heard! Its true that Texans don't slow down in bad conditions, but its also true that we never get ice or snow, so our infrastructure isn't prepared for this kind of thing. It's like when I hear about people dying in a heat wave in the north and I look at the temperature and its 95 and I'm like wtf? Different places just have problems with weather they don't normally see.

Austin is the best example of that. Tons of truly terrible drivers, bad roads, hills, and its far enough north to get severe freezing and legit snow.

I lived next door to campus across the street from Crown and Anchor and whenever the town shut down during snow wed just sit out and laugh at the fools trying to leave campus.

Never did see anyone make it up that hill.

Which hill? The little one at the annoying ass intersection right next to Crown?

Smfh if it wasn't for the pandemic I would probably be there every week.

One that I can recall is south of the 360 bridge. I remember there being ice on the roads over there maybe about 7 years ago or so. Tons of cars were stuck. I was trying to go to lunch, but I just decided to turn around because so many cars were facing in random directions and struggling to get up that hill.

typically these pileups happen during a storm, where you cannot see the crash before it's too late and when you brake you slide and crash. there looked like plenty of good visibility here so it's just a problem with them going too fast and not braking in safe manner.

Yeah that 5 way intersection that Crown and Anchor was on. That apartment was a shithole. When you opened the refrigerator door it would hit the opposite wall of the kitchen.

I'm not surprised. I used to live a couple blocks north of there for a year when I went to undergrad. Lots of good times at Crown though, many pitchers shared and burgers eaten.

The force of a collision increase exponentially with higher speed. Yes, going 5 miles faster absolutely is measurably different.
