And in the opening scene Bateman says that Paul Allen is at the other end of the restaurant at a table, and they show the back of the head of a dude who does not look like Paul Allen (Jared Leto)

Do you think this was a cost cutting measure, or a sign that maybe Batemen didn't actually kill Paul Allen?

This is probably deliberate. I remember thinking along similar lines when I watched it, whenever they show him but don't show his face it's never Jared Leto

I think it's intentional. There are at least 3 cases of mistaken identity in that movie which I think is them commenting on how all the business yuppies look the same.

I'm going with the "he never killed anyone" ending. He was just a frustrated man with an active imagination who MIGHT kill someone because he can't get help

This one is reeeeeaallllyy subtle though. You wouldn't catch it on a first watch through, maybe not even a second watch through. This is literally like 1-2 minutes into the film. You haven't met Paul Allen (Jared Leto) yet, so you don't know that it isn't the Paul Allen you are introduced to later. And they don't call attention to it possibly being mistaken identity.

I've watched this movie maybe 5-8 times over the years and I don't know that I've ever noticed it.

Is this the restaurant? I really feel like this is on purpose. The movie is pretty carefully done and doesn't cut corners anywhere else, so why here? I think it's supposed to be subtle to unsettle you. This is pre 30 seconds to mars, pre oscars Leto. A very talented man but this is before he's big news, I think it's done on purpose.

It's in the restaurant only a couple minutes in. And yeah, it's pre Leto being super famous. Buy my point is, if you don't know going into the film who Paul Allen is or who the actor playing him looks like, when you see this brief glimpse of the back of his head, you would have no reason to believe that it wasn't actually Paul Allen or Paul Allen's actor. There's no reason to feel unsettled or to start to question if there is mistaken identity because you haven't seen Paul Allen yet, Jared Leto is not a big star so you aren't expecting to see Leto Paul Allen, so you assume what Patrick is telling you (that Paul Allen is there) is the truth and that the person you are seeing actually is Paul Allen.

For me, I don't always tie names to each other that quickly. So watching the film the first time when he says Paul Allen and I see a random guy, I wouldn't have caught on immediately the next time they say Paul Allen and introduce Leto. My mind wouldn't have made that connection

I remember seeing Leto and being like "hmm something is off here". Not him as a character or anything or performance, I just remember something off. I remember seeing Paul Allen the first time and thinking that this doesn't jibe with what we know about him so far for some reason.

Considering the importance of the character's ambiguity, I can assure you this was done on purpose. The more it gets analyzed the more sure I become. This is not a movie that missed tricks like this.
