Synchros are my favorite, but the meta was at its best in the later part of the Xyz era. Both of them were great, plus Fusions and even Rituals had viable decks in the meta.

Pendulums started the downward spiral and Links flushed the game down the tubes.

Not sure why pendulums not on the list when you can summon them from the extra deck also.

Anyways my favorite is probably xyz. Due to its balanced and decent versatility. While not being as spammable or op as Links can be.

From the list I go back and forth between fusion and Synchro

Xyz really altered the course of the game. Letting ANY two LV 4s make a staple like Utopia the Lightning or Castel or Abyss Dweller fundamentally changed what is possible in YGO and unlike fusion or synchro there's no need to coordinate between material and a card that makes the summon possible.

Fusion is the most balanced, or maybe most under-balanced, in the modern meta. Way back fusion was a strong mechanic because you got a special summon from monsters that could be in your hand and in many cases eg Cyber Dragon the monster wasn't a dead draw if you didn't already have Fusion in your hand. Nowadays though every decent card in the game special summons itself and someone else for free and main deck monsters are no longer really designed to stand alone.

Synchro is cool because you can chain synchro on synchro monsters for cards like Crystal Wing. But synchro is in a strange place where there you can't just get a staple Synchro out like you can a staple Xyz or Link. A lot of cards are on the banlist because their recursion makes it a little too easy to go into a very small handful of actually strong synchros. The balance around these cards in the modern game is not too great.

Link is kinda ugly tbh. VRAINS is the most boring YGO show, you fall asleep watching it, even Roboppi and Ai couldn't really save it. Link was made super generic so it could be the backbone monster type to support other monsters, but that just made Link itself really good once they started printing true Link boss monsters like Borrelsword. And now they walked back Links restriction Fusion/Synchro/Xyz so the gimmick no longer even exists. And LOL at Firewall Dragon, the anime main boss monster, getting banned due to being bullshittingly broken. They recently made an errata... like two years after Vrains ended, nice job.

Pendulum got me back into YGO. It felt like a very fresh approach to the game. Unlike other card type additions, pendulum is just an alternative way to play, and doesn't force other decks to use it to compete. And pendulum as a concept isn't even inherently busted. It starts as a -2 and you need to be able to churn through a ton of material to make the potential plusses on summon meaningful. It just so happens that Performapal and later PendMagicians were some really busted archetypes. All these cards just throw +1 and +2s at you because Konami couldn't be assed to treat pendulum with care. Now Pendulums are still restricted to summoning to Linked spaces from the extra deck, which overbalances PendMagicians while making every other Pendulum archetype in the game's history literally unplayable. And to add insult to injury, the only real new meaningful pendulum support we've gotten is fucking Endymion, the disgusting wall of text that makes you juggle 40 spell counters. Seriously?? Who asked for this? They haven't even made a Link Monster for Odd-Eyes, whose archetype gimmick is to have a version of itself for every card type... I dont really play yugioh so much after this change.
