I remember playing it as a kid and loved the idea of it but this was like 20 years ago. How well received is it? I saw they did a remake on the DS I think so curious if it's worth picking up.

tbh it's relatively mediocre. A little on the easy side, but the latitude one has in party composition and the ease of change is pretty sweet, and from a world building perspective the whole past-present-future thing is cool.

the DS remakes were never released outside of japan

Ah. I wonder if the switch port of the originla version is to see if there is a taste for the remake coming to the switch.
