Weird... those never gave me much trouble. Did you know you can avoid the top one completely? Just have a monster bump into you as you hit the square. You can also use the "spell" spell to make them easy. IIRC all the projectile throwing monsters turn into slimes and you can run through. Maybe it only works for one screen.
