Fallout: New Vegas is defiantly an RPG, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is defiantly not an RPG. I don't know enough about Dark Souls, or Monster Hunter to say if they are RPGs or not. Based on my knowledge of them, I lean towards yes.

OoT is only an RPG if you can

• explore a vast landscape
• combat is sword based
• there are dungeons to find and complete
• there are tasks to complete
• there is a running storyline throughout
• You can collect items to increase your abilities

You (player) assume role of Link in a fictional setting (Hyrule). Player takes responsibility of acting out roles (playing as Link) through a process of structured decision making (going on a quest to save Hyrule). Actions may fail depending on rules (throw the boomerang, you might miss. Swing your sword, you might get blocked)

Monopoly is an RPG.

You (player) assume role of Dog, Hat, Car, etc. in a fictional setting (cardboard Atlantic City). Player takes responsibility of acting out roles (moving the dog, etc. around) through a process of structured decision making (buying properties and building houses). Actions may fail depending on rules (go to jail. go directly to jail. do not collect $200)

I chose New Vegas, but I guess I consider it an action RPG in my mind, and there is stat progression. I guess its just odd that New Vegas is that far down the list when its probably the most traditional RPG there. JRPGs are basically their own genre, since the only commonalities they share with WRPGs are stats and a focus on story.

Believe it or not, there was a time on this websight when people would flame you if you called a JRPG an RPG. This was before the term JRPG got popular. Apparently during that time ONLY D&D games were true RPGs and everything was not. Hyper categorizing things is such a toxic trait.

Back when I use to argue that Super Metroid and Castlevania SotN were more different than similar because SotN was literally an Action RPG and SM was not, someone tried to convince me SM was indeed an RPG to try and to say the game were more the same.

It has 'character sheets', some dice roll mechanics (I think... anyone feel free to correct me on this), stat based progression systems with some player agency... I personally would've considered it one.

It is kind of interesting how the term 'RPG' seems to have evolved over time. A lot of games across many genres have adopted elements and mechanics that at one time you'd only attribute to RPGs like Dragon Quest or Baldur's Gate.
