The game has limited movement and the main two buttons you use are R and A, which happen to be giant on the GameCube controller and there's no other controller like it. The Wii controller is close but it's not as good and the motion controls/waggle are a whole different issue.

The best way to play RE4 to this day is the Wii remake using the GameCube controller.

GameCube controller is super overrated. The triggers feel like shit unless you're playing F-Zero GX and the c stick is a piece of shite. So is the z button.

I'm replaying the PS4 version now, and it has not aged well. RE5 and RE6 are alright still, though.

Re4 and 5 always have tank controls. 6 smoothed everything out, but at a price a lot would say. I didn't like it at first but now it's my favorite TPS controls ever
