My parents paid $850 for a Shih Tzu about 17 years ago. Worth every penny. They went with a Yorkie mix - a so called designer breed - this time and paid $450, IIRC. So far so good. House broken in 3 days and picked up fetch in two days.

I find it interesting that pure breeds are do sought out when it's just for a pet.

I wasn't really dead set on getting a purebred dog, I remember it came down to getting a German Shepherd or a Black lab or just some kind of bigger dog that was jet black. what ultimately tipped me towards getting a purebred German Shepherd instead of visiting a shelter was the fact that I have two indoor cats and I'd never had a dog before so I was terrified that it would kill them.

I contacted reputable breeders and requested a purebred German shepherd with the lowest prey drive possible. I now have my sweetheart dog who likes to lay around with me on the couch and loves both cats while her brothers and sisters are all police dogs lol

Nothing for either as I dislike the practice and don't support breeders, but nearly $3000 between them soon after, for shots/getting fixed/ a couple preexisting conditions for one of them.

I find it interesting that pure breeds are do sought out when it's just for a pet. Why is it so important?

behavior traits are more predictable with pure breds. like, when you get a pure Labrador Retriever you have a very good idea about what kinda personality the dog will have. versus mutts, where even if you know their ancestry / heritage, determining which traits are dominant is nigh impossible without just spending time around the animal.

that said, i'm a rescue dog 4 life person

Mutt master race. I find it interesting that pure breeds are do sought out when it's just for a pet. Why is it so important? A status symbol somehow? They're usually not as well behaved as mutts. Which could be linked to people wanting them for the wrong reasons. No reason to want a mutt outside of a companion. Of course, this is no disrespect to the individual. You'll know where you fall.
Pure breeds tend to have a lot of joint issues and inbreeding can cause issues. The Shih Tzu also had cataracts(!) which is common in pure bred Shih Tzus.

Something like this. All in all have probably spent a few hundred or so for her spaying and some checkups
