I couldn't remodel anything because the lumber yard were out of wood from everyone else renovating and doing home projects

Small contractors can still operate under the radar under "shutdown."

What does that have to do with my post? A small mom and pop store isn't a $443B a year company.

I focused on Wal-Mart only. My bad.

How many hours a week do you work? That's a lot of money for kid's work. Let's see a pay stub.

The common argument is mom and pop shops cant stay afloat at $15...how many employees do most mom and pop shops even have? If $15 is too much to be able to pay the already limited staff they have there are bigger issues with the business already.
That's kind of the problem. Local stores struggle with online competition and economies of scale that let them sell things to the end customer for less than it costs the local store pays for it themselves (it's why my local coic shop game up on selling DVDs, Walmart charged less than his distributor.)

But I mean, just for my own former job, my boss ran a couple of small thrift stores with 10 employees between them that were just starting to eek out a profit. When Alberta went to $15 minimum wage from 10, that's $5 x 10 employees x about 170 hours each per month (40 hours week) plus vacation pay, pension and employment insurance benefits. It came to an extra ten grand a month, which was a 1/3 of our revenue. They're shut down now, on a business venture my boss (and myself for that matter) never saw a dime from.

Since some people can't see past the major corporations, the little guy gets hurt. A lot of businesses are very small and can't afford evena small increase to expenses if revenue doesn't go up. The only way minimum wages doesn't just end will all of us working at Walmart is some kind of ration book system to keep money spent local.

Even big corporations, you guys realize that they aren't all sitting on massive piles of gold, right? The average Walmart location has about a two percent profit margin. When you go there and spend $50.00, they make a dollar in profit from the sale. A buck. The idea that just because they have huge gross profits they can afford to give everyone a six figure income shows an enormous lack of understanding of basic economics, but then again so does everyone who wants a higher minimum wage.

For most businesses, it's less a matter of "can't" than "don't want to". Business primarily seek to maximize the prosperity of their executives & shareholders, which has a high preference for minimizing cost. Most business wouldn't pay you at all, if they could, which is can be seen in unpaid internships.
