Nintendo's CEO unilaterally canceled it. The story goes that pretty much everyone on both sides agreed to it, and the game was almost fully done, then Nintendo's CEO found out about it and at the time they had a blanket policy of not approving anything that could help a competitor.

Wasnt it Nintendo who shut this down? In some way they still have ownership of the game even if they dont have the license. Its very strange. I just remember that Microsoft was willing to even let them put it on the Wii Virtual Console at the time as well and they said no.

It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, Microsoft clearly got the better deal. The Xbox live arcade version was high definition and had online multiplayer, while the Wii version was either a straight virtual console port or only lightly modified.

Ive seen footage of the Dam level being played but never the whole thing. Some lucky motherfucker has this thing on a hard drive somewhere.

If this would of came out back in the day for 14.99 or 20 I would of been all over it.

That does change things somewhat as Wii owners surely would of cried about it but it would of been cool to buy the original on VC too imo.

Hiroshi yamauchi ruled with an iron fist but really didn't know the market very well. He was mostly responsible for a lot of the bad decisions made from the Nintendo 64 onward.

Nintendo had extremely top-heavy corporate decision making basically until satoru iwata took over, and even then it still took a few years for them to adjust.

What you saw with the unusually edgy, at least by Nintendo standards, Mario Odyssey was the result of Iwata shifting creative control to developers instead of corporate heads. Same reason why breath of the wild had voice acting.

It was from EA, and it was absolutely terrible.

And not even remotely related to Goldeneye - the game or the movie.

It's kind of crazy to think that the same guy who you know laterally canceled the Super Nintendo PlayStation also unilaterally canceled the GoldenEye remake.

As stated in the description, MGM and Eon Productions (Bond film production company) were the primary reason for its cancelation, and that Nintendo was insignificant. It was due to rights restrictions they put in place after the game's surprising success (mostly for the multiple characters and references to other films).

This is why virtually every non-Donkey Kong Rare property has been re-released/remade for Xbox consoles EXCEPT GoldenEye.
