It's been a while since I went on that ride but I don't remember anything being racist about it?

well, in a general sense, the trope of the "African safari adventure" pushes the idea that africa is an untamed wild land that europeans must traverse, survive, and conquer and that is ultimately is a reflection of how they see the people who live there.

its kinda like Survivor. all these rich, well off people going to indonesia to "survive", acting like their life is on the line, when down the block there are folks living like that every day

And it's not really a depiction of any particular culture either, it's just a generic "tribal" design they came up with in the 50s.

Ah. Didn't remember those. But honestly, those are pretty tame. I've seen way worse stereotypical tribal Africans. And I'm not sure how it's racist when there are still plenty of African tribes that look similar to that. Especially in the time period that the ride is set in.

Disney could have worked directly with tribal communities to design that segment of the ride to be completely 100% accurate to that tribes' culture and people would still scream racism, or cultural appropriation, or whatever other label gets them cheap likes on twitter.

I cant recall the specifics of that tide at all but I'm pretty confident theres some questionable material, being a 50+ year old Disney ride lol

Welcome changes in my opinion. Jungle Cruise has never been high on my list. I don't like how everything looks cheap. People say "that's the joke" but I disagree because it obviously would have looked more convincing to guests when Disneyland was first opened.

For the record, on the other hand I'm not happy about the Splash Mountain changes.

Of course it looks cheap. It's more than 50 years old. And I doubt it's a popular enough ride to invest in state-of-the-art animatronics for.

This is dumb but at the same time I can't even pretend to care enough to muster finger wagging

Who the hell cares what Disney's rides are?

If this wasn't in the news would a single one of you even have noticed?

I know you wouldn't because when they turned the Phantom of the Opera set into a harry Potter Ride it wasn't in the news and you didn't care. And that actually was destroying history

The whole safari angle is neat and probably fine, but that picture of tribal Africans is questionable.

I think it's pretty tame, honestly. They don't have those neck rings, or bones through their noses, or big discs in their bottom lip or earlobes. You usually see at least one of those when they're depicting tribal Africans.

It's popular enough to get a Dwayne Johnson blockbuster.
