There have been murmurings, I would be willing to spearhead it. Not really sure where to start. Talk to other similar unions first? Ask a bunch of co-workers if they'd even consider it?

This would be the best step, most people severely misunderstand what being in a union actually means.

This is the worst thing you can do tbh.

Well people I trust at least, don't you need 30% approval?

I think you'd be better served talking to other unions before starting to approach coworkers, to see what help and advice they can provide in that process. You have to be careful about that sort of thing because bosses tend to not to take it kindly when they find out you're organizing.

Solidarity, and good luck.

It varies, but be sure to keep it to people you KNOW you can trust, not "they seem okay, maybe they're interested".

Alright I'll only talk to my friends in other unions for now

What do you mean people don't understand unions? In my industry unionized workers don't have to buy their own equipment (huge for us), make 40% more, have properly functioning tools, and get sick pay and maternity leave. I don't see a downside

I mean no offense, but seriously research the subject before attempting this.

i'm the lone dedicated developer at a midsize company; bargaining power in itself, though i don't leverage it

if anyone should be unionizing, it's the sales team at the corporate headquarters

A union can be fantastic, and has worked well many times before.

However, many times it doesn't, and to say they're completely beneficial and "the only people against them believe corporate jargon" is not only extremely ignorant, but causes harm to those that believe it, start a union, and end up worse off.

This is why I said "research", not "don't do it".

Yeah I've experienced this at my last workplace. We couldn't get enough support to even have a vote and their reasoning was nonsense. A lot of people were afraid too, as they'd fired the last round of unionizers for minor "unrelated" reasons

See if theres a local IWW chapter you can reach out to. They generally have a lot of good information about how to approach the process and they can even get you in touch with other unions in your industry.
