Crash 1 is just as old as Super Mario 64 and a much better game.

I mean Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World are much better games than Super Mario 64

Groundbreaking and good are 2 drastically different things.

If the game wasn't good, games wouldn't be following in its footsteps and revolutionize an entire genre.

At the time the game was ground breaking. I never got into it though even during the N64 era. It is one of those games that without nostalgia goggles could easily be viewed as a game that has aged poorly.

Super Mario World is a much better game and still amazing to play.

It's to the point where Tick-Tock Clock is considered great amongst a sea of terrible late game worlds? Even though that's just a one long obstacle course that you have to do by s***ty segments over and over and over.
I like the concept of tick tock clock though. There's a surprising amount of people who seethe at that level but when I tell them if you jump in at 12 o clock everything is stopped they freak out because they didn't know about it. It's possible the level is hated for the moving parts which the game gives you the option to manipulate as needed (you can speed it up or slow it down or even stop it completely!). After all you have to have the clock moving to get one of the stars in the face of the clock. Unless you want to do some speed runner shenanigans of course.

It could've been cool, and just on its own, it's a terrific parkour level. But as a SM64 world, it's terrible. You have to go through that first section of Tick Tock clock like 5 times minimum, not counting the red coin in which you go another path. There are like 2 different stars at the top, and it's one of the hellish worlds to 100 coin even with time stop and all.

Time stop also doesn't really change the level much. It makes everything a little bit easier but still doesn't make it less repetitive

it's weird how people talk about stuff like "the water level is based on the height you enter at" and "the clock speed is based on where the hand points" when there are literally toads nearby that explain in no uncertain terms how it works

the only reason to talk to toads is to get stars, all other toads are just there to say hi to you and we have better things to do than say hi!

Haha you're correct about that, but it seems like most players don't even do that, unless you're old school bored and do everything you possibly can in a game to extract as much value out of it from what you asked your mom to buy it for you since you aren't getting another game till your next birthday kind of thing.

The thing about Wet/Dry world that recently got me was that, while I do remember that the water level changed based on the height of your jump into the painting, I had forgotten that the high jump raised the water level higher than you possibly could within the level. This stumped me for over an hour when I tried to get to the pink Bob-omb at the top of the level. The highest switch wouldn't get the water high enough, and I couldn't jump high enough from any angle to reach it. I spent the rest of the time looking for those invisible teleporting platforms to get me up there, since other levels had that trick.

I had to actually look it up online to see that you could only raise the water high enough for the pink Bob-omb from outside the level. Not even the Toad would have helped then as one would assume the water height accessible from outside the level would have been the same heights available within the level.

I'm actually not sure how I figured it out as a kid. I may have just been farting around with fancy jumps and discovered it by accident.

yeah, and the very same toad that gives you a star in the final area is the same one who tells you about the clock's mechanics
if people don't know about the clock, it's because they make an active decision not to seek out information from the game (or choose not to read it when it is presented)

Mario 64 had weird level design, like they just slapped a bunch of random assets together.

Plus the movement is annoying when mario skids too much or slips down a hill or doesn't turn.

I don't disagree with this.

Like people have said, it pioneered 3D gaming as a whole so people give it plenty of passes.

It still holds up as a playable game today though. The controls are just fine though and I think it's one of the few things that actually do hold up well for this game.
