Not sure Wth it could be, everything requiring battery seems fine but it just doesn't turn over. I turn the key and it whirs for a second and a half then it stops

Battery's like original so probably about seven years. Could be that, but the fact that everything else turns on fine leads me to believe it's something else. But I don't have a good way to test it.

Find your starter and bang on it a couple times. The solenoid might be getting stuck.

Just tried again and it sounds like it's 80% of the way there, like a zoom out then a zoom in sound (like casting a fishing hook and reeling it in)

At least the second car still starts. I guess I just get this Passat towed in the morning. Never dealt with this before

If you have a working second car, take the battery from the first and take it to an auto parts store. They can test it. Also make sure the battery cables are tight and not corroded. If the battery and cables are fine, I'd guess either alternator or starter.

Battery has lower cold cranking amps

Not a bad idea but what considerations are there for removing a battery? I can barely remember the order for connecting cables for a jump, paranoid I'd screw something or myself up trying to pull it out.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm not sure if there are any specific things to watch for when disconnecting. I've always just used a wrench to undo each cable, then pull the battery out.

I hate that everything is automated these days. I just want to speak to a human person. Trying to get roadside assistance set up and it's just tiring listening to recorded messages and shit.

Might just try to jump start it and then take it to the dealership myself.

Sounds like a starter solenoid issue. Banging on the starter with a hammer might free it up like that other poster suggested. (No, typically you don't fix cars with a hammer, but in this case it's a legitimate hack)

Knowing my luck I'll hit the wrong thing and put a hole in a reservoir and watch something drain out lmao.

I'm just getting it towed to the dealership, it's annoying but ultimately I have more faith in their ability to clean battery terminals than I can.

Finally got it delivered and hopefully they can do what they need to do and I can get it today.

Really need to invest in a portable jump starter kit though, and maybe some tools to keep the engine compartment clean.

Thank you both, yeah I went ahead and already ordered one lol.

I need to start thinking ahead. Have dodged a few bullets with a few things, like I have a portable air pump for tire pressure (omg so convenient compared to having to drive to the gas station and fighting with people for twenty minutes over a pump you need to put a dollar in for compressed air). Just wish I thought about other shit like this.

It's also a good idea to have a first aid kit in your car as well as a small automotive fire extinguisher, while you're buying these kinds of things.

They did a diagnostic to make sure it wasn't just the battery... and it was.

Not the end of the world at least it wasn't like a 5k repair lol.
