Yeah, you don't technically have to. Plus, they cannot charge you interest!

I've not paid thousands in bills. A few went on my credit report, but oh well. Still 700+ score

Just don't pay them. You'll be hounded by collection agencies but they are not the IRS and can't take the money from your bank account and such

well technically I think collectors could still come after you depending on local laws but it shouldn't affect your credit score after then, same as a bankruptcy.

I was a debt collector; this is how it goes.

After a while to hospital will send them to a collection agency where they will call you and ask you for money; just dont. After 7 years it reaches a statute of limitations and disappears. It may go on your credit, but it can only stay on there for 7 years total then it; again, disappears

So, a total of 14 years? Also, during those first 7 years, is there anything the hospital or collection agencies can do other than bug you?

No, and if you're tired of them pestering you, you can can try and negotiate the debt down significantly since their want something rather then nothing because of this.

also, theoretically if you had credit karma or whatever, you could always dispute your bills. could, theoretically again, have them wiped out that way.

when you get a call from a debt collector, change their number to Debt. So you know who not to answer.

after 7 years it drops from your credit report if you were unable to have it successfully disputed. if you maintain strong credit by paying CC's fully and timely and have other bills you pay always on time, your credit will not be tanked too bad by one or two collections on your credit report.

oh the video i saw was posted higher up

I saw a video where if you type in "hospital name + financial aid/assistance" you can find out how much the hospital is legally required to bring your bill down by if you call the hospital and negotiate with them. It's all based on how much you make per year.

The example I saw was if you make 3 times or less than federal poverty level (so around like $34K or less a year) then the example hospital would forgive the entire bill.

If you don't want to do that, you can always call and negotiate your bill by saying "i can't afford that" and they'll bring the price down.

Yeah, this seems doubtful but I'd like it to be true
at the end of the day, most hospitals are businesses and just want to recoup some of the expenses (either from the services rendered to you or general expenses that they try to diversify into your bill (which is why a $1 IV bag can show up as like a $275 charge))

so instead of scaring away paying customers with an insane bill, they'll negotiate down to something you'd be willing to pay.

though I am not involved in this field and everything i know about it is second hand so

Average but I never use credit cards or get loans. The unpaid medical bills didnt show up on my credit history though which I was surprised about, maybe theres some law against hospital bills not ruining your credit?

No. 7 years from the time it was put on your credit. The first 7 only applies if they didnt do that, but as soon at it goes on your credit; that's the 7 years. No one waits 7 years to get it on your credit.

Or just tell them the words "never call me again" and they legally cannot call you. Just send letters that can go straight into the trash.

Worst thing is if they try to sue you, but they literally never do.
