After analyzing it, this is the conclusion I came to as well. If it came down to him or Assange, obviously he moved to protect himself.
The bigger question is why would Mitch view prosecuting Assange as such an important matter to wield it over the President in that way.

Technically we are supposed to protect whistleblowers, and he didn't intentionally end up in Russia, that was just the place he had gotten when the government revoked his passport so he couldn't leave.

I'm not really gonna say he should absolutely 100% be pardoned, but I'd think Assange would have gotten one, especially considering his timed Wikileaks were a major reason Trump won the 2016 election. And Assange wasn't even pretending he was doing things for the greater good, he's just an a**hole.

He violated many, many laws and there is no legal recourse at this point for him to try to claim protection.

Not according to the law, which is what matters here.

A "whistleblower" is someone who goes through legal channels to report instances of wrongdoing (fraud, waste, abuse, etc.). Copying a shitton of classified documents, giving them to a journalist and then running to another country automatically precludes you from receiving whistleblower protection.

Regardless of how you feel about Assange, you should want him pardoned because you cannot commit treason against the United States as an Australian citizen. It also has terrible implications to make doing journalism the government doesn't like treason.
