It seems like people don't like it when it's pointed out that the internet is corporately owned. Google and Amazon own the majority of servers that power the internet. Reddit, Youtube (Google,) Twitter, Facebook make up the majority of the internet public discourse. All corporations, all looking for that sweet profit.

And with all these corporations, we've convinced ourselves it's okay for them to decide who shall and shall not speak on the internet. We're all at their mercy, and we celebrate when people guilty in the court of public opinion get kicked out. Good, they're private corporations, they can do what they want. We're conditioned to hate, belittle, and dismiss everyone who's been kicked out of the clubhouse.

We're so fond of saying "well if you don't like, it make your own," but whenever someone does, there's an immediate, persistent smear campaign against it, and when it's finally destroyed, we again celebrate, still safe in the arms of our corporate overlords. We're at the point where we celebrate the silencing of the president of the united states, as a capping point of our 4 year long hatred of the bad orange man.

We can't trust people to decide who to ignore or listen to. We need our social media corporate overlords to decide that for us, and we shall celebrate every wrongthinker who is deplatformed, demonitized, depersoned, and just plain removed from our safe, corporate internet.

The idea of "I don't agree with what you have to say but I'll defend to the death your right to say it" is dead, because merely defending free speech means you're defending nazis, and we can't have that.

Of course this is an alt whining about being called a Nazi

BTW there are tons of people with tons of different views on every platform. Trump and company weren't banned for having different views, they were banned because they are promoting violence that for once was acted on and it cost us lives. Right wing views weren't why they were banned.

I think TC has a good idea. You should begin lobbying to create a public (re: government owned) Fora and then all the neo Nazis as well as people who "just want free speech" can go there where it can't be taken down by anyone since it's a public service with legally protected first amendment rights and you can plot to overthrow the government from there.

That's surely a better deal for everyone.

No one has lost their right to free speech in America. Private companies are not required to administer or facilitate the exercise of your rights. They do not need due process because they are not public legal entities.

Bit premature to go full Orwellian but I get where you're coming from.

The reality is that humanity needs to get over this technological growing pain of taking shit you read on twitter or Facebook seriously.

I mean it's easy for me to say it should all just be free game, let people say what they want to say and chips fall where they may. But I'm not the one running one of these companies that has to deal with the real world implications that come out of that and the blame that will be expected for me and the company to shoulder.

There should absolutely be consequences for doing bad things, and realistically when things are as sensitive as they are right now it makes sense to limit the spread of words that will incite things further.

But, its not something that people should revel in, its something that should be carefully observed as a necessary evil to stop worse things from happening, without giving these entities the idea they can get away with doing whatever they want and people will cheer it.

i'm okay with private companies setting rules for what's okay and what's not okay to discuss on their platform, especially if what they're banning is basically just hate speech.

It is quite specifically a right vs left issue. You are working on the prediction of a slippery slope, but you need something to start slipping to have credibility.

We're already on the slope. The internet is corporate controlled and we celebrate when people are cancelled. That's not a good precedent.

It's not a slippery slope if there is no progression, is the thing. What's been celebrated so far is telling bigots to shut the fuck up. When you see that extend beyond bigotry, when, fucking, twitter bans avocado toast or something, make another topic.
