I feel like if you're a pedophile and going into random chat rooms or whatever to pick up ostensibly underage girls, it's similar to tiptoeing through a field of rat traps. If you trip one and break a toe that's basically your own fault

Yeah, kinda, I see it the same way as a Bait Car that police sometimes use. It's like, you didn't really solve a crime, you created a crime and then solved that. But on the other hand, these guys are pervs and probably should face some kind of punishment.

It's just difficult to prosecute someone for intent to do something (technically they haven't actually committed a crime because the person who tricked them in the chat rooms isn't underage)
