He wouldn't have any knowledge of this, so I'm assuming in his final moments preceding death, a force ghost must have come to speak with him and explain how to do it.

Yoda? Obi-Wan? Qui-Gon? All of them?

Theres a lot of time where we dont see Vader. Who's to say Obi-Won was only talking to Luke and not Anakin? Maybe part of Vaders change if heart was a lot of contact with Force Ghost Obi-Won.

"This idea can be found in the now non-canon book The Rise and Fall of Darth Vader, where right after dying, Anakin is met by Obi-Wan, who tells him hes in the netherworld of the Force, and if he wished to revisit corporeal space, he had one thing left to teach him.

In canon, however, there are a couple of theories on how Anakin was able to become a Force ghost. Perhaps the most popular and accepted one is that of the Force Priestesses teaching Anakin how to do it, meaning he knew how to become a Force ghost before he turned to the dark side, "

You could have just googled this.

I didnt even realize that being a force ghost was a special thing until I first saw someone ask this online. Did the books make becoming a force ghost something special or something?

It was a technique created by Qui Gon Jinn, who taught it to Obi Wan and Yoda.

Episode 2 did. Obi-Won mentions an "Old friend" having one last lesson to teach him. I dont remember it exactly but is implied its Qui-Gon coming back as a force Ghost to continue teaching him the ways of the force (and why Obi-Won knows how to do it).

Because the idea of having to be taught how to be a jedi ghost was an invention of the prequels.

In the original trilogy, Jedi just become ghosts when they die.

Not true at all; Obi-Wons little show before he died was him using that power; hence the lack of a corpse and why Vader was a little confused.

The canon explanation is that it's a light Side power so when he did it it confirmed that he really does shake off the dark side.

That's true, but was it always meant to be a learned technique way back when the originals came out?

Obiwan is a weird outlier since Yoda and Vader both die in the traditional sense and become ghosts.

This is true. The Darkside version is what Plaguas uses and takes over another person's body. The light side arent that mean about eternal life.

It's also funny because nobody else just vanishes when they die until TLJ.

Honestly the explanation from the prequels doesn't really make any sense. Lucas probably made it up to explain why no one else comes back as a Force Ghost but it's very clunky.

I understand there is a bit of retconning since the prequels made it a novel technique discovered by Jinn. Just curious how it all plays out with Anakin.

Personally, I like to imagine it was Qui-Gon's spirit coming to Anakin at the very end to explain how. It would make sense.

Plaugeis didn't start the Rule of Two, that was Bane. And the thing about Bane jumping bodies was never fully confirmed even back when the trilogy of books about him was canon, which it is not anymore. Pretty much all that Bane did in canon now that we know of is make the Rule of Two and whatever he did as a spirit in the Clone Wars series.

I knew he supposedly learned to live forever but I guess I never paid attention to how he did it.

Like I always figured that meant physically staying alive was the unnatural part, not taking over someone else.

Is all this shit in the movies?
Am I supposed to be paying attention?!

Its not a story the Jedi would tell you. Its a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

Oh yeah you're right.

The funny thing is I don't really know why Lucas felt the need to give a 'training' explanation for it anyway. The concept of training to be a Ghost just sounds...silly?

Then then again he thought we also needed to know who built C-3PO and how the Force works so I guess that's what he was into.
