Anyone think that's unfortunate? I don't know bro. Maybe I'm getting old but when I grew up, we had shows that taught you about friendship, responsibility, etc. And there were plotlines, character development, etc. Nowadays you have YouTube channels that feature kids just playing with their toys, or obnoxious loud dudes playing video games. And kids will just watch these channels for hours and hours and hours.

I do think about that actually. Not sure what can be done about it. Parents need to limit their children's access to devices, plain and simple. It opens the door for problematic situations.

I see it as less "this is what kids are watching now" and more that they have a different form of entertainment in addition to what we already have now.

All of my friends with kids let them watch Youtube for a while - sometimes regulated by them - but they eventually get bored and watch, play, or do something else (yes, that also includes playing outside, which isn't as "dead" as people think either).

TC, Ive said the same thing.

My niece watches YouTube and never laughs, smiles, or emotes in any fashion.

I even asked her what does she like about what she watches and she couldnt give an answer. Its really frightening.

Like, I ironically feel millennials had the best kid entertainment. They werent mindless slapstick like older shows, and had depth.

It really seems terrible to not know what Saturday morning cartoons feels like.

ted talk about the elsagate stuff. pretty relevant.

i'm at a loss because i know there's awful and worthless material all over youtube but there's great stuff too. i don't think growing up on youtube is inherently wrong, it's just something parents really really need to have an active role in and monitoring of.

All the cool kids grew up watching Linkin Park AMVs back in 2006. I can't imagine growing up with current YouTube.

on one hand, parents shouldn't rely on television to teach their kids morals

on the other, it doesnt hurt. ive learned a lot of my morals from tv shows

but yeah, with my kid i will definitely limit how much youtube they watch, at least while theyre super young. maybe when they're older ill relax

I don't let my kid watch any of the kids channels (Ryan, FGTV, Raiden and his dad (forgot the name) etc.)

He basically just gets to watch star wars and star trek videos and he definitely doesn't get to do it all day.

It mostly just amounts to shit parenting.

I miss my 90's sitcoms (Step by Step, Full House, Fresh Prince, Boy Meets World, Full Improvement) where at the end of each episode, the parent came into the child's room and the music got all soft and somber and the parent explained a life lesson. Whether it was Bob Saget or Tim Allen, they were teaching the kid some sort of lesson.

Yeah, I worry about it, too honestly. Two of my nephews sit and watch Roblox and toy unboxing all day.

Thankfully, the youngest, age 7,would rather always be outside.

Kids love watching garbage clickbait videos of fake scenarios that teach them to be bad people. But it is the parents fault for giving them a tablet and going okay you can do whatever you want on YouTube as long as you shut the fuck up

This is what I came to post. Some of this shit is literal filler designed to distract, not to educate. My nephew watched a lot of it until I actually made my brother watch what he was enjoying.

My nieces want to be a youtuber.
My brother talks about how his kids are really into what he calls the nerd culture. But tbh, i look back and its probably because of me.

I used to be in the area where the kids were left to be babysit. Id be in my room and his kids would stay with me. I would play games and watch anime lol

There was a year were i bought ~$900 of custom rgb lightsabers. One of my nieces was like 4 yrs old. We watch dxd sw clone wars. I would ignite the lightsaber and the roar would scare her. After some time she got used to the sounds. She began to hold the saber and use it as light. She wouldnt swing the saber. She was just into the lights and mechanics of it all. One brand, changes color with a flick pf the wrist. Another brand had two buttons to press to change its colors. Afterall, those were custom lightsabers i had made. It did worry me that this lil niece was holding $900 lightsabers.
I tried to be cool and say to her that jedi dont drop their lightsabers. So she got used to holding it. She had her way of saying lightsaber too. I wish i took a sound byte of her saying it and making it ab alert or something lol

Anyways, my nieces collectively are into videogames. Theyre into among us roblox fortnite minecraft mostly. They actually got me into fortnite at one time. Its fun with them as my squad. Id carry sometimes to the best i can but eh, its fortnite. So i dont get too serious with it. I just play my rpgs now while they play their games

We watch corpse husband when he streams. They ask me about youtube n stuff. Cause i show them my youtube and they always remark how i still have over 1000 subs. I told them my youtube is old and no longer active. Back then youtube was limited. Then the tier creator content came and videogames took over. I just did gameplay videos no commentary from me. I got slapped with copyright claims and all. I tell them how editong videos on wmm was simple free and took forever to do. Maybe its stuff they dont hear behind the videos. Theyre really interested in that stuff.

They go on their tablets and vlog. Craziest thing is how comfortable they are just doing basic things. They vlog their hide n seek games in the house. They did tour videos of their rooms. Theyre on tiktok doing dances. None of them are old enough imo to be on that platform. I just dunno...

I try to remind them that the internet is forever even though they having fun. Not to bring them down but to keep them grounded to reality that there maybe someday whatever they do might be seen again later as they get older.

full house didnt teach anything.

Kids do something. Danny gets mad. Danny apologies for being mad and they have ice cream.

It literally taught nothing about consequences or how to deal with life problems or growing up or.... anything.

Most shows really didnt.

I'm at the top age range of millennials and I feel like people are WAY overstating the values and lessons instilled by 90% of the shows we had growing up.

Fresh prince was different.

Boy meets world had some lessons and maybe step by step too. Thats about it.

Its pretty worrisome. Remember when 80s cartoons taught lessons and had child psychologists involved with the storylines? Plus even the commercial breaks would feature segments on healthy eating, conflict resolutions, exercise, etc.

Now kids have all their life lessons coming from Jake Paul.

Youtube does have OC that are actual "shows" but the problem is kids much prefer the shit you listed like streamers or just obnoxious videos like reacts. With cable becoming less and less of a thing it's just gravitating more towards streaming outlets

That first one is actually pretty great...tells kids to go out and play and not just lounge around and eat at home all day.

Good commercial with a good message
