Is it a fear grounded in reality that we have to worry about big tech censoring voices it doesn't like or is big tech finally stepping up and recognizing the damage that misinformation causes and so they have a responsibility to de-platform it, no matter who's the source?

Which isn't, surprisingly, a legal justification for breaking the laws or regulations of the country you do business in.

The problem is less about what they've done, and more about what it signals they might be willing (or at least, able - which could become "willing" if it changes hands in the future) to do. I don't think anyone - except the extremists themself - actually care about the extremists getting booted off personally.

The people complaining right now are incredibly wrong in their outlook and it's easy to disagree with them en masse but big tech does have too much power and there's not much stopping them from using it for nefarious reasons (they already are selling your data for profit)

It is amusing, though, to see the right whine about the same things the left whined about twenty or thirty years ago.

its a pretty bad idea to trust an organization implicitly just because the people they're cracking down on at the moment are your enemies.

It makes me die inside, it's one of my strongest beliefs so it sucks to see it passed around like this

Tbh I don't think we as a society were really prepared to deal with the internet, social media or big tech companies. Probably will take a few generations for people to really figure it out.

I'm not really sure what you were originally referring to, I was just pointing out that Dems who were 20-30 then are 50-60 Trumpers now.

The government is probably still in 2005 when it comes to understanding the pipelines

Hippies.
Hippies in the 70s became the yuppies of the 80s then the tea party of the 90s, etc. etc.

I dunno.
Whoever the "outraged local mother" of the 90s was, they're the righty weirdos now.

Right now I would say no banning they did was unjustified.

i agree. the problem is that the only thing that made them actually do anything was the capital riot. the stuff people are getting the boot for are stuff people have been doing unmolested for the past 4 years, something just occurred that was big and visible enough to make it so they couldn't sit around with their thumbs up their asses without getting come down upon themselves.

that lets you pretty easily deduce that they are primarily acting on public perception rather than any sort of guided system of morals. which is to be expected, but what happens when a similar event happens born out of a movement or effort that's mostly good rather than dumb and misguided as it was this time? people were using social media to coordinate stuff during the BLM protests this summer, but what would have happened if one of those actually went much too far and people associated with it started getting zapped and cut off because public opinion was misguided in that case?

like dont get me wrong, i feel absolutely zero sympathy for the people who participated in that shit, but with the frequent crushings the US likes to subject leftist movements to it would be good to have some ground rules set in stone instead of twitter sleepily trying to make good PR by suddenly professing to care about what goes on on their site. otherwise it isn't hard at all to see them using it against us, especially for causes twitter is a lot less friendly with like labor organization
