I can try to sneak my way around the back of the aurora and not see it anywhere. And then without any warning other than ambient sound effects that sound way off in the distance, I will be on deaths door and my pants will be filled

also is the ambient sound directional? Id like to be aware of the direction a reaper is in and I hope its not just music essentially

I think the sound of the reaper leviathan is directional, but it tends to go silent when it's about to attack.

There's a fun bit of trivia you get if you manage to scan one: that roar is echolocation. If you can hear it, it can see you.

For real, I think I tacked an extra eight hours onto the gameplay just because I was terrified.

And I didn't even see one until I was like 80% through. It was the open sea that gave me the spooks.

My first encounter with one was definitely the most a video game has ever scared me. I have never screamed at a video game before or since, had my heart racing and everything lol.

Having everything completely quiet just to turn around and see this massive fuck coming at you is just mean

Sounds freaky. I never got very far into that game so I think the biggest fish I saw was like the size of a crab. Maybe ill try it again some time but that sounds scary as hell

Yep dark/deep water is probably my biggest fear despite being a good swimmer. I skipped all of the underwater collectibles in AC: Odyssey, lol.

And then the sequel throws even bigger and freakier leviathans at you.

It kind of is IIRC. Spoilers for game mechanics: it kind of works backwards. It can't see you when it roars, but the roar is to let you know that you're within its range.

are we talking about the same roars? theres one you hear way off in the distance, and if you're man enough to get close to one theres (usually) a much louder one when it goes in for the kil. but its terrifying when theres not a loud one

also, the sunbeam getting shot down is a top 10 gaming moment, at least in recent gaming. you watch your only hope of escape just get obliterated before they realise whats happening. then everything is as it was. you get back in your shitty little seamoth as you hear sounds of leviathan reapers in the distance

Game is great.

The leviathan gave me a mini heart attack but the one that actually got me the worst was a crabsnake.

I yelled so loud people came to check on me ;-;

It's functionally the same though. The explanation is just "it's roaring because it can see you" instead of "it can see you because it's roaring."

Ive always had an intense fear of deep water so Ive been too afraid to try this game out. I have it through game pass though
