I mean the first movie kind of led up to it with the puberty switch. But I can see parents complaining saying they are sexualizing a child and boycotting it.

Let them complain. I trust they could still pull off a coming-of-age story like that's viewed tastefully with the general public. It's not like they have to - or would be able to - depict actual sexuality.

You could make a story about puberty that doesn't revolve around sex. Basically the emotions get into a tizzy and they don't know why or the kid deals with their first crush. You don't have to put any plot significance on the kid's body, just how they feel and how that's changing.
