COD 4 came out as "the better player wins" in 2007 when it was competing with Halo 3, which is effectively Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.

On consoles there just isn't much competition really.
It's really not too successful on PC - releases are generally in October/November, you see the player base start to fizzle, there's a boom around the holidays since everyone gets a copy, and then there's a decline to flatline by March.
